I don't shoot enough to warrant getting the drill bits out, but what is the best product/technique to clean the carbon out of the gas piston? Especially interested in how folk clean the crap out of the smaller chamber of the piston.....
I use the correct method. Drill bits, No solvents, no lubes, no abrasives to outside of piston. Just wipe her down. Rinse with super hot soapy water and done.
The only "tool" other than drill bits is the BAD armourers tool.
Sadlak drill bit tools only work for U.S. Spec pistons same for the BAD tool. Armtac list the BAD armourers tool.
For chinese pistons, take it with you to the hardware store (the piston not the rifle LOL) and see what fits.
Getting carbon out of the smaller piston tail portion is the important one.
I've shot over 1000 rounds on average before piston fouling started to cause cycling problems. Every rifle could be different though, depending on ammo ect.
But an ultrasonic cleaner.... That's not a bad idea. I got for christmas for cleaning brass.... I might just try it next time I've crudded up a piston
Yes! Noinco surplus seems have higher amount of residue build up, so does their handgun bullets. IVI, PPU and Reminton 150g FMJ case still shinny clean(you can easily see the flash hole) after firing, norrinco case always dark/black inside.
I just use oil or solvent and a small brass brush to get inside the inner.
Same with the outside, just a but of oil or solvent, if it's caked on good, I'll scrape it off with a knife or just go to town on it with a brass brush.
Don't treat it like a tea cup at a tea party. It's a battle rifle. Scrape it, oil it and get her back together
and that's why every cleaning manual, or advice from knowledged m14 smiths say...... do not use abrasives or oil based products on your gas piston or cylinder wall ...... ever.
put down the brass brush and do more research
but then again, it's your rifle and spare parts are everywhere LOL
I am totally confident that using a brass brush and oil solvents will have ZERO negative impact on my Norc- I just ensure to wipe all oil residue away prior to reassembly. Lucky my Norc cannot read the "must drill" articles !!!
