Introducing oneself to the ranchers:

The gate is closed, but lights are on in the house.

Does one open/close the gate, drive up, stand next to the truck in plain sight and hope the dogs don’t eat you?

Or does one walk up and knock?

Or does one come back later and hope the gate is open?

Or is it diplomatic to call first/instead?

How does one do this kind of thing?

leave your name and number and a brief explanation of your visit in a ziploc bag taped to the gate in plain view or if they have a road side mailbox , stick it in there.
Or.... if you can locate the rural postmaster's office, head there and leave your contact info for the postmaster to stick in thier PO box.

I wouldn't ever enter a closed gate in the interior unannounced...... it is not a cool thing to do.

My property has 2 gates and if the main front one is closed it means I don't want visitors :)

Thank you all.

I’ll leave a note and a business card in the mailbox.

This is a “May I hunt on your field?” call, rather than a commercial one, but the card is still the most convenient way to pass on contact info. Figure it will add a bit of respectability too, which’ll help when they make their “Worth the risk/trouble?” descision.

Opening Day of hunting season isnt the best of times to introduce yourself on the door step.
Leave a contact name and number (business card) at the gate and hope they get back to you.
Recon starts early in the season :)
