I'm trying to get these 2 pieces apart to clean and strip them, but can't see how to do it... looks complicated.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Fair warning:

The M305's Kommunist sights are a POS. That and the mystery wood stock are the only drawbacks to the $ 400 M14's.

Be warned that once you disassemble the cheap sights, they might NOT get back together. That's why I always suggest to keep them together if you shoot irons. If you shoot with optics, then who gives a crap about your cheapie sights.

If you plan on shooting iron sights exclusively, then buy yourself a set of USGI M1 Garand sights. M14 elevation knobs are not worth the extra (collector) expense that are marked in Meters. The M1 Garands sights marked in Yards work just fine for me.

So please don't take your chinese sights apart without this warning!! Whaddaya expect for $ 400? It's a great rifle for the price, but (big BUT) for the rear sight assembly.

Cheers,
Barney

Hungry's correct. One rifle the sight came apart no problem to clean and reassembled no problem. My second 305 it was a pain to take apart and now comes apart on it's own. Thats why their scoped...Bob

I was changing out a Norinco rear sight this week. The result, the elevation and windage drums in the garbage as they came completely apart, sheared metal off the elevation drum which made in unserviceable. The tighten screw assembly on the windage sight separated from the drum itself.....agree with hungry 100%

Hi,

Thanks for all the info guys, but this IS for a USGI Garand sight.... just a cheapie I picked up on ebay that I want to strip with muriatic acid, as there's some buildup in spots that I havent been able to remove, but I don't want to just toss the whole thing in and miss the junk inside the knob.

Rifledude, thanks for the link, but it doesn't show how to seperate the knob from the pinion, which is what I am looking to do.

I have a question.... are the sights that come on the new manufacture Springfield M1A's as good as USGI?

Thanks!!!

I guess I will jump in here and answer this one . Are the Springfield "New" manufacture sights better than the Chinese ones ? The answer is YES ! Are they as good as USGI ? NO ! They are cast by a company in Taiwan named Wayne Machine and they are also sold in the USA by another company,SARCO. They are Okay ,but not as good as USGI .
Hope this Helps !
Mike
