Does anyone have any suggestions on how to dull a varnish finish on a stock. The finish looks really good but its a little to bright ans shiney for my taste. Any idea would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for the reply's guys it a good thing I did not follow the advice of my friend and use a coat of boiled linseed oil.

The oil wouldn't hurt it but it wouldn't have made it come out dull at all.

I'd say wet sand it using some 600 or 800 wetordry paper. That'll dull it without leaving noticable sanding swirls or lines. 400 would work too but being a bit more coarse it may leave noticable marks.

If you don't mind a bit more work then use paint remover to strip the varnish off and then go for the boiled linseed finish for a really authentic military style finish. You'll likely find that you want to apply 2 to 4 coats of oil with a few days to a week between each. The result will be well sealed wood with the nice dull look.

A very good way to take the high gloss off your varnish,, mix rotten stone{from Brownells} with a bit of linseed and polish with a soft rag. this will not cut through your varnish, simply will dull the shine. After you get the desired soft look, wipe it carefully to get rid of any rotten stone , then rub on a coat of linseed over the varnish. Gives the protection of varnish and the hand rubbed look of linseed.

I might suggest a good rub down with Super Fine steel wool and coat it with AerOwax It's a old style paste wax. I just did it to a stock that I refinished with Tru Oil that I thought looked too shinny. Looks good now.
