Hello forum,
Newbie here, did a search, nothing came up.
In the last year I got my non-restricted and restricted. Fairly well set up with a Ruger 10/22, Remington 783 .308, Winchester 12 gauge pump and a Ruger 22/45 & S&W 9mm for handguns. Enjoying the new hobby!

I want to hunt a moose this year and I don't want to use an outfitter. Birds too.

How does one go about finding a partner.
I searched kijiji, Craigslist, backpage, nothing.

Any tips appreciated!

Start by getting a tag, go hunting and meet other hunters while in your hunting area. Talk hunting at socials, start easy, some are opposed to hunting. Very few will advertise that they are looking for partners. Some areas have mentoring programs, inquire at shooting ranges or hunting clubs. Hunting is tradition and many have generations of hunters that keep the tradition alive. If you have a cabin in chosen area, chat to your neighbors.

Wow! Great forum! 20 minutes and 4 replies!
I did join the Lachine shooting range ($400/yr) and I am already finding the benefit of chatting up other members, re ammo costs and cheap places to buy, etc.

I was just wondering i there was an online place to schmooze about the possibility of hunting partners. Of course, nobody wants a nutcase to be their hunting partner!

I think the biggest stumbling block is guys are reluctant (and understandably so) to reveal their spots. I wouldn't mind helping out a beginner and sharing my meagre knowledge but don't want to give up my honey holes.

I think you might have more luck if you had an area already picked out so guys don't feel you are trying to learn their secret spots.

Well - Look at the stickied "Mentoring " column above. You might want to start out with a simpler hunt - say partridge and rabbits. Moose hunts are not a casual affair - they are typically organized camp hunts that go for a week or so. In most cases, it would be difficult to accommodate an inexperienced stranger, and get a consensus from all the camp members.
I don't want to deter you from your quest, but if your objective is to spend some time in the woods hunting this fall, I would suggest a lesser quarry to start with.

You may have to find two hunting buddies for a moose. Check the latest hunting regulations. I had the same problem like you now and couldn't find the solution until I convinced my wife to be my pardner. Now I find out that some places require three hunters for a moose tag.
In Quebec everything is made extremely complicated and discouraging. I gave up and start hunting in the States.
I'm not aware of any place in Quebec where you can hunt without being on a ZEC property. By mistake if you kill a Moose on a ZEC territory you're finished. They will involve the cops and they will go as far as taking your guns. Be careful. Even if you are camping and fishing on a ZEC property they can raise hell on you.
I spoke once with a "hunting guru" at a gathering and I was asking decent innocent questions about hunting in Quebec. The guy was looking and talking to me like I was 7 years old and he caught me smoking. He born and raised in Quebec. He told me that I will never hunt in Quebec if I don't know "people". It looks like he was right.
Quebec is the place I call home and I have the right to tell the things as they are and not sugar coat the shait.

We may have to meet and form a club and name it "Hunters who don't know people".
Good luck in your quest and keep us posted with your progress. It will be instructive and others could follow your steps.

Its alot less complicated than you think. Theres is lots of land to without knowing anybody. Zecs are pay to hunt areas as are Sepaq parks. Like every else, any easy access land has hunters on it but if you're willing to explore you can find many places to hunt. You can now get a map for your gps of all the crown land in Quebec. You can hunt on Outfitter land for cheap compared to other provinces. Quebec is a great place to hunt, don't kid yourself. With one partner you can hunt moose within a 4 hr drive of Montreal for less than 1000$ and have a huge territory to yourself or do it for nothing on crown land of you are willing to put in the work. Not to friggin bad if you ask me
Where do you hunt moose in the U.S.?

See? You know "people". Just joking.
Montana and Idaho are good for moose. Not great but if I got lucky anyone can.
I like US hunting for other huntings. In Canada I need to take a class to shoot a damn turkey. Are you kidding me. Also I love dearly pheasant hunting. After the wild boar the pheasant hunting is my favorite.
Next year in the spring I'll try to find an Outfitter for geese close to Montreal. Don't know any yet as I still don;t know "people".
Best geese hunt I ever had was in Arkansas. I cannot describe.

anybody you know at work?

And as for the ZEC any membership (no limits on quantity ) will give you right to hunt on anyone you choose!

Try a outfitter they sometime have group that are missing one guy and don't want to pay the part of the fourth one!

Hunting rag as in sentier chasse-pêche as classified adds with '' looking for hunting partner''.

Good luck!

Your best bet is make friends. My first 2 years I was all alone hunting public land. What a waste of time. I made friends and formed a deer hunting group and joined with some moose hunters. To find land and get into groups you have to network. We got a tip on a farmer who had a good piece of land in a great area. We jumped on it right away because there are tons of montreal hunters like us looking for land. I moose hunt on a zec and it's not the headache people make it out to be. The first time you hunt a zec you're probably road hunting but a little work and you can set up a stand and have a spot to hunt and work on. Moose hunting is a long term commitment you have hunters in your group depending on you to be there get it done and pull your weight around camp.

Good luck

i had the same when we lived in Saguenay and hunted moose in the Charlevoix ... if you can drive above matagami up to the transtaiga there is a lot of moose and not that much hunters .... but you have to drive ....
