how to find out wildcat caliber

i was shown an old pistol at a gun show down in the states and this guy said it was wildcat caliber and they don't make the bullets anymore.It looked like an old "38 special"to me but I don't know squat about that kind of stuff.so how would you figure something like that outdo you measure the inside of the barrel and/or the cylinder.do you measure the length of of the cylinder as well.
 
I shoot mostly antiques; chamber cast, slug barrel and check rim thickness. Many English cartridges have thin rims (around .040" if my memory is correct) vs .065" for North America. Easiest reference is Cartridges of the World with a more extensive collection in "a Handloaders Guide to Cartridge Conversion" by Nonte. Be advised however, it is not uncommon to find errors in the published figures.
