Hey, what chambering is out there to get similar preformance of the 338WM, but in an '06 size bolt head. I believe the actions are the same length, but the magnum has a big bolt face. 338-06 is the easiest to come to mind, 338 Edge seems a bit more powerful. 338 RUM, would that one work? 330 Dakota...anything else?

a 9.3x62 will drive a 250 accubond or TSX at 2650 from a 24" barrel. Is that close enough?

Guess I'm looking to stay with the good B.C. of the 225g .338 bullet. The 338-06 is just about there, just how to extend it's "legs" a bit. The AI version doesn't seem to do it, according to the balistics tables anyway:rolleyes:

IIRC maybe look into the Scovill line, he had some standard 06 based cartridges that went pretty good. My Whelen comes pretty close with a max load of RL15, but like you say the bullet isn't as streamlined. I was going to do a 338-06, but chickened out, and went with the plain jane 338Win mag. Loading down is easier than up most of the time ;).

Realistically speaking you can't. The .338 Win Mag makes good use of its case capacity. RGV's suggestion of the 9.3x62 is about as good as it gets if you are looking at a non-magnum bolt face.

375 Ruger will do it and then some.

Next in line is the 375 Whelen, then the 9.3x62, a bit behind that the 35 Whelen, and finally the 338-06, any of which can be "Improved" a bit (e.g. 35 Whelen AI).

Hhhmmm....this conversatin is going the way i thought it would..it's telling me I don't need a .338 cal!! I have a 35 Whelen, I'm searching for a 300H&H. Seems the 338WM is the best choice in the catagory as the next "step-up" thanks guys

338 Hawk; basically a 338-06 improved. They claim 2500 fps with 250's.

The whole Hawk line is very interesting I think.

356 Hawk is supposed to push 250's to 2600 and .375 Hawk is supposed to push Swift A-Frame 250's to 2670 fps - that's real 338 win mag performance, just out of a slightly bigger bullet.

But isn't the Galliard a mag boltface and belted to boot? Really I might as well stick with the 338WM. I'm trying to rebarrel a standard length/boltface action and get preformance like a 338WM....but that Gallird does look neat:rolleyes:

Another option might be a 9.3x64, although there is one caveat - the rim diameter is 0.496" so your bolt face would need to be opened up a bit. However it will fit in your action length and gives you better than .338 WM performance. You will also spend some $ on brass, but hey, you will be different and have a very solid performer.

Short barrel 338win thread?

There used to be a good thread on short barreled 338 win mags. Can't find it now. Anyone know where it is?

Thanks.
