How to get 338WM preformance...

But isn't the Galliard a mag boltface and belted to boot? Really I might as well stick with the 338WM. I'm trying to rebarrel a standard length/boltface action and get preformance like a 338WM....but that Gallird does look neat:rolleyes:

Yes Mag bolt face & belt. 9.3x62mm is a fabulous caliber if you want to stay standard face. 286gr bullets rock.

Years ago I had a 338-06 imp. Short neck, mag opened up to seat bullets way out. In a 24" barrel I got pretty much factory 338 ballistics. It was in an HVA/small ring mauser. It made sence to some extent in a smaller/lighter action. I now shoot a long throated .338 Mod. 70.

HHmmm, funny that, I have a HVA -06 I was thinking about doing something along the same lines

Yup!

I would suggest the 9.3X62 is closer to 375H&H performance than 338Win.

The 338-06 is a fine round, but depending on the action you could have the boltfaced opened by a gunsmith and just have the 338 you want.....Why not?:D

What kind of action is it?

LA Rem 700 is the one I'm tinkering with. I was thinking of rebarreling it, but if it won't give a useful edge over the 35 Whelen, then it's really not worth it to me. 338-06 would be fine, but not enough advantage to justify the cost. If I can find a way to get more "reach" then I might talk myself into doing it....well hell I might do it anyway;)

I would have someone like Dennis Sorrinson (Guntech) open the bolt face, barrel, and chamber to 338Win.....Why mess around if you want 338Win performance? Last time I had it done I think it cost somewhere around $150.00 to open the boltface and redo the extractor.

If you are opening the bolt face you can also consider chambers like the 340Wby...Perhaps the best all around balanced factory (338) chamber.

I use a 338-06 impr with a hornady 250 interlock and imr 4350 65gr for a vel of 2650 fps out of a 24"brl.Also use a 200 gr hornady with imr 4320 62gfor a vel of 2950fps. Also belief a 35 whelan is a good cartridge for the heavier hunting.

I take it that once a boltface is opened to accept a magnum cartridge then it will not handle a standard .473" cartridge anymore. I can only think that the primer will not sit centered and the firing pin could miss the primer if the boltface is too big. Is my thinking correct here? thanks guys

I wouldn't bother opening anything up. Either build something on the standard face, or trade your bolt in the EE for a Mag face one. Won't cost you anything, and your barrel will be headspaced to the new bolt anyway...

It's either a magnum boltface (338 win) or a standard (30-06) boltface....Take you pick.

There is no going back to a standard bolt face once it has been opened.
