How to get a .303 brit

????? Huh? ??????

The No.1 is a dog$hit simple under lever single shot. The M77 is a conventional bolt action. Are you confusing the two?

Nope.
The No. 1 IS a right hand action.
The right side is lower than the left for loading with the right thumb.
If you have a scope mounted over the action, there is less room for a leftie to thumb in a round.

Still, it's a falling block, so more like a center action lol I'm sure it would be easier to load, then say a lefty operating a RH bolt LH.

I have been shooting right handed rifles from the left shoulder since 1975, when I started shooting left handed. I don't see an issue here. As far as the No-1 is concerned, any disadvantage to shooting it left handed is in the imagination; it is not a real issue.

Well, loading my scoped No 3 isn't as easy for my chubby left thumb to seat a round.
It can be done, but requires more care.

I guess ill just have to overcome the inital akwardness of it or fork over my life savings

Hey all
Pardon my ignorance here but maybe you folks can help me out..
I shoot lefty and have yet to ever see a left handed rifle in .303 british.
I was wondering what caliber rifle I could i pick up and have reamed to a .303

Seems pointless but years ago i was gifted a surplus of ammo and havent been able to use it and would like to give it a go.

Why would you need a left handed rifle?

303 uses a larger bore than other 30 calibers, thus there are VERY few rifles that could be converted to 303.

The last time I visited the Prophet River web site they had an Uberti stalking rifle in .303 British. Basically Uberti's version of the Winchester 1885 but with a bunch of aesthetic changes.

Chris.

It would be possible to convert a left hand, long action Ruger 77 to 303 but the conversion would entail some tricky work to get it to feed reliably.

You need the right size bolt face for the 303 cartridge. And if you re-barrel a 270 / 30-06 chamber it will be able to cycle a 303 and have clearance to load and eject the shells.

As a leftie, I get to see the old one come out and the new one go in. I find cycling the bolt, while holding right handed, is very unnatural for me.

Bolt face would have to be opened up a bit and the extractor modified. Easiest way would be a belted magnum bolt but again the extractor would have to be modified. Biggest issue is the mag it needs a lot of modifications to function with a rimmed case. All doable.

Could just use a Ross magazine. Single stack, top-loading, and high quality.

Opening the boltface is no problem. Altering the extractor is no problem. Altering the mag box and achieving good feeding is the hard part. The P14 mag box gives a good example of what is required but probably can't be adapted to a 77; it would be easier to modify the Ruger box.

P14 mag probably too if you look at the Ruger m77 I see a lot of p14 in that gun.

The magic is in the feed lips and such. The P14 is just a body without any feeding surfaces, so the action would have to be heavily modified to feed. The Ross magazine has integrated feed lips and a center feeding magazine, meaning you only need to make the magazine fit the rifle, which is far easier than troubleshooting feed geometry. Center feed also simplifies things greatly as dual-feed magazines can be tricky to get feeding properly.
