How to get a hand gun?

That was my thought too, especially if the OP is "new to guns". Having said that when I got my RPAL after having my PAL for a year there were still some questions that I had. At the time I wasn't a member here so I called the CFC, the local instructors, etc, and still had to review the Restricted Regs and procedures prior to the exam.

So my thoughts on this particular thread are mixed. My spidey senses say this is someone looking for anti-gun ammunition, if you will- looking for someone to give them advice on how to illegally obtain and use a handgun (you won't get that info here!). I must concede that there is a possiblity it's a gun newbie with questions. If the latter is the case, Welcome to the hobby!

WOW! you got it wrong. i am not interested in getting any firearm illegally. the fact is i am actually planning on becoming a police officer for a career and doing something like that would really blow off any plans of becoming one. sorry if you got the wrong idea

A lot of current firearm owners think its illegal to own handguns?? This guy admitted owns a .22 and thinks handguns are illegal.

i dont think they are illegal. i know they are restricted and i knew some basic facts about the laws behind them. im just a little confused. i am pretty young and my interest in guns is very recent and i am still learning. but im not as ignorant as you think. i was just trying to get more insight onto the subject.

No. This young guy does not own a .22. I know thats what he wrote. I talked to him and he told me he has family member, who has a .22 they let him use. He wants to learn more about the shooting sports and how he can get his RPAL when he turns 18. I simply told him to go to this site learn about firearms.

Its nothing personal Wiinis, often new members will make there very first thread, and they are actually looking for information to use against legal firearms owners. These threads often, by the way they are written look very suspicious.

In your case, if you are looking to own handguns one day, the very first thing to do is the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) or challenge the exam. If you pass, you will get your RPAL and after enough time and background checks, you will one day be able to legally buy handguns.

Curious owns 22 ..young fellow hence must have a PAL being young as he would not be old enough to have a POL.

Therefore he would have seen the Restricted books for the course. No doubt someone would have mentioned during the course about the restricted course after the long gun part.
The topic does come up. So where is he using the 22 ? If he has a hunting licence then he must have seen restricted info or spoken to MNR instructors.
Alarm bells going off.

There is just something off here, when I got my PAL I was made aware of the handgun licensing at the same time. And thinking handguns are illegal?!? None of this makes any sense

It isn't supposed to make sense. If he is an anti poser, then he is doing his job by trying to fish for mis-information. But on the other hand, just because he was told a lot of this information about handguns in his regular PAL course, doesn't mean that he will remember it. The teacher probably said something like "but don't worry about that... it won't be on this test", so it gets dismissed and not remembered because it's not "on this test".

This is especially plausible if he is a newbie, because he likely doesn't communicate with people who tell him over and over and over again all the hoops we restricted owners have to jump through; but now he will know. With a very little passage of time, if he is serious, he will soon become an expert on all the nonsense we deal with.

I really wish that there was a way to prevent people with biased agendas from accessing our sites, but the catch 22 is that type of restriction on access prevents new people from getting involved, and we really need the new people.

alright thanks... that is understandable though. you guys i respect the legal gun owners who are not committing crimes and showing people that guns arent bad. and you are just trying to protect that.

The way we treat them like enemies before figuring out who they are is sure to help us.

Just saw the other posts, he is not an owner. OK guard dog now in check.

New fellow interested in sport shooting my apology. What ever it takes to help. The ownership thing re the 22 threw me a curve.

i was wrong how i worded it. my dad owns a .22 that i use. i never took a course but my dad has shown me and taught me a lot about fire arms

No, no...I never thought you were actually trying to do that. Quite the opposite in fact.

The thought crossed my mind (and probably the minds of others too) that you may have been an anti firearm type person looking for that kind of response to your question to fuel the anti-firearm lobby's fire. There are some that would troll like that. They would post a question or a statement and look for a response that they could use against law abiding firearms owners. And of course, by definition, that wouldn't be law abiding as you know.

As you are a "gun newbie", again, I welcome you to the shooting sports. It's provided me with a lot of enjoyment, the opportunity to meet some new and good people, and put some meat on the table in the bargain.

Wiinis if your in the south west area of Ontario EESA has a great instructor.

You can get PAL RPAL and do your Hunter safety course if wanted. I believe EHOC has on their site major info on what you have asked,

K thanks. and thank you everyone your giving some great info.

Wiinis,

The simple way is to take your PAL and RPAL course this will give you a basic background on firearms both nonrestricted and restricted. Once you pass the exams at the end of the course and you pass your background check you will receive a RPAL in about 30-45 days.

Once you have your RPAL you have two choices in order to qualify to own a handgun in Canada. 1. Target Shooter or 2. Collector.

I would recommend you choose Target Shooter. I would recommend you then take a tour of some shooting clubs in Ontario.

Once you join a club, you can then get a transfer approved for your first handgun in Ontario.

You will be required to take another course at the club of your choice in order to prove you are a safe shooter. It is for the good of the other club members as much as yourself.

Once the club okays you, I would go out and buy your first handgun. I would recommend something simple like a .22 revolver or .22 SA pistol.

You see it is alot of work upfront but it is a very rewarding hobby. Just remember that owning a gun (legally) in Canada has a huge responsiblity for the owner.

Not trying to lecture you, just some friendly advice.

Cheers, and good luck!

I welcome you to the site and dont hesitate to ask anyone for help, I do. I also found that looking around through the posts and responses in the different categories pretty much answered most of my questions before I had to ask.
Even if it was an anti fishing for info what exactly is it anyone would worry about unless they are counselling to commit an offence and break a firearms law? anti gun or pro gun or anything else theres only one legal way to do it and if someone asks me I tell them. I dont really think anyone can run us down for explaining the lawful process of obtaining a restricted firearm and anyone who helps a person with illegal means to do so would be banned immediately, perhaps even reported to the authorities. The mods will not tolerate it. I think some need to chill a bit.
welcome to cgn.
