Hi there;

Is there a way to reclassify a handgun from restricted to antique status?

Have a nice webley Mark I that is restricted but could be antique.

Is there a way to change it over? What do I have to do?

Thanks for any help :)

Just get a template prescribing that all Mk 1 / Mk ll / Mk l** are antique, why leave a paper trail that lead to your revolver.

If you call through the 1-800 number and work your way to the Tech's who do the FRT classification it should be pretty straight forward. Hopefully someone can give you a direct number or email.
They will want detailed pictures of the markings etc. Quite possibly they will require that you find an official verifier. If you wanted to go that route right off, the verifier would know who specifically to contact.

Being a MkI Webley it should be pretty easy as all MkI and MkII are antiques and there are enough of them out there for most to be familiar with them. Might be an issue if it's been shaved for 45acp but I'm not up to date on that particular aspect. Perhaps don't bring it up if they don't ask....

45 ACP isn't on the 'list' of 'bad' calibers.

It should be [pretty straightforward getting it un-registered as a Restricted, and getting the RCMP "Antique Letter", which is essentially a different form of registration.

My records show the Webley Mk. 1 was made from 1887 to 1894 . So that ( in .455 ) is within the Antique Class .
Getting a letter is needed as it is now improperly registered as a restricted. Many Hg. where registered in the past
but are now ,,, "Prescribed Antiques" , from newer legislation .

It is originally .455 caliber and has the “bird feet” markings on all the parts, even the screws! Pretty cool!

Thanks guys. I’ll call the 1-800 number and hopefully get somewhere with it :)

When my buddy (Loko, R.I.P.) got his antique letter for his Webley MK II, he sent it back to Miramichi and had it edited to include the information that it was converted to .45acp and still a prescribed antique so, whether it is shaved to 45 or not shouldn't be an issue.

the CFO tech will want pictures sent of the markings

Just being picky here but the CFO doesn’t have tech’s. The CFO is an appointee and their staff is pretty much administrative with a few that have the authority to inspect ranges for compliance. The RCMP do have tech’s and a firearms lab.

Hi everyone,

So we managed to have this revolver reclassified legally as an antique! Thanks so much for all of your help.
It is a Webley Mark I*, serial 14037.

We received an email asking for pictures, measurements, and any markings which we sent.

How do we find out more about it? Especially if it’s been shaved to .45acp? Thanks so much

Hi tiriaq,

Thanks so much. Is there any other pictures I could provide that would help?

The plan is to sell this revolver or possibly trade. Do you know an approximate value for a revolver like this?

Bubba will turn the rear of the cylinder off in a lathe to allow clipped .45ACP or .45 Auto Rimmed rounds to be chambered. Your cylinder looks full length.
Value? Probably make your eyes water. Could be north of two grand.

His revolver is already registered, as a restricted, so the paper trail already exists.

But if the paper trail is wrong, thats the CGOs problem. People are not legally liable for the CFOs errors.

At the end of the day it diesnt matter matter what the cop on the side of the road thinks, or what my registration certificate says. At the end of the day the judge is going to look at my 357 black and decker hairdrying revolver and determine it is not a firearm.

If its an antique, its an antique. Period. The only benefit to correcting the CFOs piss poor paperwork is reducing your odds of hassle. To me it seems like the conversation to get the paperwork updates is more hassle than the hassle you might be afraid of.

But thats just me.

Hi Cameron,

Interesting story about this revolver.

We had a gun business owner come over to appraise my dad’s collection of firearms as my dad had decided to begin downsizing (which we are still in the process of). We had thought it might be smart to consign them all as a package to the guy so we wouldn’t have to deal with any hassle.

Guy comes over, gives values, and we finally go down the list and we make it to the Webley. The guy looks it over, says it’s supposed to be classified as a prohib and not a restricted, and as such was only worth $250 because we would have to reclassify it before selling it. Lol. Obviously we did some research or we wouldn’t have ended up here ;-)

The paper trail goes cold when the revolver is sold as you dont require a PAL to buy.
So it’s Much different than Restricted status.

This all sounds good and well but why go through the hassle of arguing with a Bureaucrat, who may or may not want to hear the story??? Then go through the time, aggravation, bullying of the the justice system to prove you were right in the first place??

It took me close to a year of back and forth diddling with the CFO to get my MkI reclassified as an antique. I had to do the research myself. I contacted Mr Black, who has the factory record books on Webley pistols.

Then, John Hipwell of Wolverine Sports, a banner advertiser, stepped up on my behalf and talked with a woman at the CFO office, who was quite understanding and sympathetic to the cause.

As mentioned, from the day the appeal to reclassify began to when it finally came through, was just over a year.

Maybe the process has been sped up a bit by now????

That antique status paper came in extremely handy for me on one occasion.

The value of the pistol went up ten fold, with provenance that it was a certified antique status pistol.
