How to get gack off rifle?

I don't even know what the heck it is.

A buddy gave me a thrashed rusty old Marlin that seems to have had black glossy paint or epoxy or something similar spilled on it too. It is splashes of this hard shiny stuff on the barrel and receiver.

I got it apart, cleaned up most of the rust, even cleaned the bore to shiny bright, but that gack won't come off the outside..

I've tried oven cleaner and now Circa 1850 furniture stripper and nothing touches the stuff.

What should I try next?

A harsher paint stripper? What kind?

I'm sure I'll get yelled at for this suggestion, but why not have it bead blasted or walnut shell blasted and reblued or parkerized?

Maybe later, but right now I just want to get down to the metal, find a butt stock and sights and see if it shoots.

That should clean the tray... do you put the rifle in it too?
Make sure you do this outside in a safe area. Very dangerous to try it in a enclosed space.

If that doesn't work try lacquer thinner and 0000 steel wool... keep it wet while you scrub with the steel wool. 0000 steel wool will not mark/harm the rifle finish.

Acetone, toluene or ultimately an automotive paint stripper would soften most paints and plastics.

Goo Gone works on most stuff. or Acetone. I wouldn't do the gasoline thing; it's just that the gasoline smell doesn't always smell like victory, it can smell like a trip to the burn ward.

Acetone and a chisel... about the chisel, use a plastic one.
Do yo know someone that has some methyl ethyl ketone laying around. That #### strips DNA out of unborn babies, it should work on your gak problem. I like my rifles too but I try not to gak on them

If it's an Epoxy get some Epoxy solvent from a paint store and soak it in a tray/tube of some sort. It might soften it enough to allow you to scrape it off with a hard plastic scraper.

If it's regular enamel then the Epoxy solvent will really soften it up and make it easy get off.

Goof-Off is basically just Lacquer solvent mixed with a little xylene and toluene. If it is in fact epoxy on his gun, the Lacquer solvent won't touch it, Xylene is used as a solvent when thinning some Epoxy Coatings but once the epoxy is dry it is pretty much indestructible.

Automotive Stripper may work, but get the strongest available.

Thanks. I used a couple spent 303 brass cartridge cases to scrape the hard stuff off.

Might try a lacquer thinner bath to see how that goes to get the residue off as that is what I have on hand

if you can get your hands on some methyl ethly keytone, its some of the best/most toxic solvents out there. ( u must use a resperator/BA, chemical gloves and apron.)

but if its a solvent based gunk it will take it off. period
