How to get into IPSC

I've been interested in IPSC for a while now but I've always been unsure exactly how to start. First off, I've got a center fire handgun coming to me so that's step 1 down. Step two is I have 5 mags with it and a holster. I'd still need a few mag holders but that's it (I think) as far as equipment.

So what's step two? I'd guess getting certified to draw from the holster. Also, what's the cost to join IPSC and then the price per match plus ammo, on average?
 
you will need to take your Black Badge Course you can check out ipsc ontario website they have alot info for you. You also have a club in Peterborough thats very active in ipsc give them a call im sure they be happy to help you
 
Go to the club you'd like to shoot at and tell them your interested in joining then find out if you are getting the right equipment before you get anything else.

What pistol, not all pistols are good for IPSC.
5 mags, is the bare minimum in Canada with a 10 round limit, I would invest in buying at least 1 or more. Shooting match in sandy ranges or muddy, will make your mags go dirty and will require lots of cleaning, also, what about when one mag goes bad? I say minimum 6, but safe number is 8.

BB cost, no idea, but should be around $200. To join IPSC ON, it is $80 but again I am not sure if membership fee is not included in BB fee.

Match of lowest level will run from as low as $20 to as high as $35
Level II matches are running from $30 to $40
Level III is getting pricier every year (no idea why?), used be around $100, now lowest you can find is $120 and can go as high as $250 (Nationals)

Ammo, if you only care bout shooting for 'fun' (no such a thing) and will go only to matches and occasional practice, then find someone who reloads ammo and sell. It is cheaper than buying from stores. Buy highest number possible. I always advise to buy around 3,000 rounds, BB is 500, then comes the excitement of getting into IPSC and another 500 will go for trying to work on certain skills, which means 2 practices. Then matches, average match of the lower level is 100 rounds, with all the extra shots and so on, Level II is 150, Level III could be as low as 25o or as high as 350 with extra shots and results or dropping bullets at bad reload or so.
If you serious, then buy Dillon reloading machine, cheapest there is like Square Deal and start loading. You are going to cut cost by minimum 40% and also will have best ammo for your gun.

IPSC Ontario rates for a BB course are $170.00. This includes yearly membership in IPSC Ontario ($70.00), $50.00 IPSC Ontario BB fee to cover the paperwork, mailings and pin and a $50.00 Instructor fee. If you are a member of the Military, special rates are in effect. For equipment, check out the IPSC Rule book on line to see approved guns for Production (cheapest Division to get into). You can get along well with five magazines. Belt and holster can be relatively expensive if you go for the "competition gear". But you can do very well with Bladetech or similar holster and mag holders that are not so expensive. Spend the saved money from buying cheaper equipment on ammo and practice, you'll be that much better. If you have specific questions, PM me.

Best place to start is w ww.ipsc-ont.org
If you are a member in Peterborough, they have a decent IPSC section so you should visit on a match day.

You need to take your Black Badge course which includes yout initial membership. It's a $170 all in, and $70/yr.

Matches can be a cheap as $5/10 for a regular club match to $250 for the nationals.

Most club matches run from 50-100 rounds. (1-4 stages)
A bigger match like the Provincials or the Nationals may run a few hundred.

I would argue that is no longer the case. An inexpensive yet quality 1911 (for Classic Division) such as an STI Spartan in 9mm can be had for less than a Shadow (which has become the the DE FACTO pistol for Production Division). And besides, Production is sooooooooo last decade!

if you haven't done so, attend a few matches down at your home (or close to home) range. see which division interests you the most which will determine the equipment you will need.

also ignore everyone who advises you to buy cheap crap, you will just end up buying proper stuff down the road... kicking yourself for wasting the money earlier. gun/mags/belt/pouches are just as important as training and practicing proper skills etc - technique will only take you so far if your equipment decides it has had enough :)

as per ammo, buy bulk once you know the calibre you want - BDX makes great stuff and very cheap in bulk.
 
any certerfire handgun 9mm or larger will work fine. try not to focus too much on who is using what equipment. your belt is your foundation, dont cheap out. get a good quality belt with an inner and outer part. cr speed and double alpha both have great products.

it would be in your best interest to find a range in your area that hosts IPSC matches. your may like to come out and see how things work and ask lots of questions. most IPSC shooters will be glad to help you out.

I've got a Sig Sauer P226r with 5 mags and a galco leather holster coming in over the next few weeks. I'm a member at the Peterborough range and will try to attend the next match.

Regarding the black badge course, do you think taking it would be a benefit or a detriment to someone who is pursuing a career in law enforcement? I'd almost rather wait so that any service that hires me can teach me their way.

What are your thoughts?
