You need split ring pliers to spread the sight hood, like you would on a split ring. I have a set, works like a charm. Otherwise it is very difficult to spread the hood cleats to bite into the front sight. Good luck
I use split ring pliers, but before I had a set, I would tie two loops of thin rope, then use them to pull the feet apart enough to slip over the sight. This works for the occasional removal, but I recommend the pliers - makes a world of difference.
Also, do NOT buy the cheapest set you can find.... I've now broken two cheap snap ring pliers putting on sight hoods. Finally bought a quality pair. Much better now.
The snap ring pliers will also work on a G/K43 for the safety snap ring and the front sight hood, as well as a Mauser, so consider the tool an excellent investment!
Plus, you can use them to remove the recoil lug nut and when they slip out of the holes and put a nice gouge in the stock you can say it's shrapnel damage! Bonus!
Just kidding! Don't use them for that! Buy the proper tool for the recoil lug/cross bolt nuts.
get a piece of metal just wider than the front sight base . hammer the sight hood on to it . put it up against the front sight base .tap the hood with a hammer until it transfers from the metal to the front sight base.
