how to identify AR upper?? help

might be a dumb question, but is there a trick to identifing an AR upper. The one I have really has no markings on it except for a small symbol on the right side that looks like a keyhole???
looked under the forearm grips and found no barrel markings.
Am i missing something?

That "mark" is a forge code. It identifies the forge that produced the forging only, not who machined it. This is pretty common practice in the aftermarket parts world. The only manufacturers that come to mind that mark their uppers are;

Colt
Diemaco
Armalite
some LMT

Basically, your upper and barrel could have been made by anyone out there and their is no way of identifying a manufacturer.

Keyhole is Cerro forge. A lot of manufacturers use these forgings. Diemaco for one. Although as mentioned above, a true Diemaco upper would have the "D" and another forge mark beside it. It is quite possible that it is Model 1 sales upper. I have seen a number of those in passing.

It seems to me that if you know it is an AR upper, you have already identified it.

If you want to know the model, show us a picture or describe the upper, including carry handle/flat top, sight configuration, case deflector and forward assist.

As the others said, if what you really want to know is who made it, that is impossible to know. I will also add that it is irrelevant.
