How to increase your odds when road hunting.

My whole intentions was to go for a good hike along a ridge in the high country, I was poking fun at how things can change. Faced with a dilemma, what do you do? Its 4 point or better season, you have planned on going for a long hike, its something you planned on and your geared for it. Before you get to the starting point of your hike you spot a nice 4 point in a slash, in a shootable area. You either harvest the deer, or you pass it up and go for the hike. I chose to shoot the deer. I was the only hunter in our party to harvest a 4 point on that trip. I'll have to wait till next yr to try out my gear on my annual mule deer hunt. The kimber mountain ascent worked good off my knee at 180 yards, from the side of the forest service rd of course. There were no other hunters up that mountain that morning, there were no tracks in the fresh snow.

Living in the city driving to our hunting area I try not looking into the fields but the odd time I do cheat and spot game. To make it legal I carry two yard sticks as seen in football games, these are 8m sticks. I place one at edge of road than run into field and when I run out of free line I am legal to shoot. Evan old Jack with his steel tape will have to let me go without a charge being laid.:p

the only bucks I saw last season were on the wrong side of the road. WMU 349 on the north side of the road and I think it was WMU 507 on the south side, and not open. 2 nice big bucks just standing there.

oh well.

and about 10 years back was chatting to a CO in the bush about a cow and calf moose we saw on the wrong side of the road and they asked why we didn't jsut get out and try and chase them across the road ??? Too much work in my opinion, and I don't trust a cow moose with calf.

Back when we had jacks we were on a jack drive and a jack was trying to cross a road when a CO came along and he turned it back away from the road towards or drive. You would never see that done now.

Since hunting is more than "shooting", that could get interesting. Take the CO's advice, "chase" the animal into a legal zone, then the same, or another, CO charges you with hunting in a WMU that is closed to hunting at that time.

Don't laugh, I have seen them pull worse.

hey now! I just knew my f'd up feet would be good for something!
Hey two dogs, there was a old fella that I met through a friend of mine. 90 yrs old and still hunting. He would hunt the forest service rds on a quad. He would get the odd deer as well. One day he never made it back to the cabin. A search party was sent out and they found him the next day. He was dead, he had a jammer and wiped out. He died doing what he enjoyed. So there's lots of hunting in you yet buddy. Bad feet and all. cheers.

When you see game walk around for eight hours come back to were you saw it and kill it. That is hunting anything less would be considered road hunting.I am a professional road hunter and consider myself smart enough not having to walk the eight hours to shoot the same animal.

you can increase your chances by driving a little faster to cover more ground in less time during those 8 hrs, but don't drive too fast for your eye site, everyone's is different, so you have to fine the correct speed for your own eyes! I too, am a professional road hunter! My f'd up feet dictate that:(
