How to index "Happy Face" mag. cap ?

Maybe not, but if your barrel separates from your receiver causing an out of battery similarity, it may not be good for your health, or others nearby. Not saying it would happen, just saying it could.

If REM intended for such modifications, they'd be installing rubber washers with instead of a spring and detent system.

If the barrel is far enough out of battery to be dangerous the firing pin won't strike the primer hard enough to fire the shell if it strikes it at all which it won't. A lot of safety in the design:D
I don't think Remington intended for any mods other than their own so whos to say that the o-ring isn't a better system but it isn't Remingtons so they of course do not use it.

what shotguns use an O-ring as a mag cap detent?

'safety issue' debate aside -- i would not risk my mag cap/barrel loosening up on me simply to get a happy face lined up (and im usually very nitpicky about things like that). noone is going to see it - and as has been pointed out, for photographing your gun you can simply loosen it a fraction of a turn.

not to mention Remington is cheap as F%@k: the design changes to the Express line of guns were made to save every last penny in the production process. remember, this is the company that designed and produces the Reminton 710/770  they dropped the ball detent from the barrel collar and swapped it for a dimpled mag and a plastic mag spring retainer/mag cap detent to reduce costs.
if an O-ring were an effective mag cap detent, then you can bet your ass that Remington would be using them on the Express to save 10 cents in production costs.

I used a rubber "O" ring. I tried a couple of different sizes until one lined up perfect. It was thick enough that I really had to tighten it down to get the face to line up, but it is on there solid now, and the rubber grips so well the cap is hard to turn off.

I can't remember what size rubber Oring I used but 250 rounds later it has not come loose.

Good job there speed. :) I like the cheek riser. Nice collection of seals you have there.

I can see the rubber seal sticking out from under your cap. It got squashed pretty good and bent out of shape.

Not sure if you can find a 1" ID flat rubber washer, it would work better.

You can use a dab of oil on the round seal before you twist the cap on, but it won't have a good grip.
