Hey all,

I recently acquired a Kar98k missing her sight hood but I managed to pick up a reproduction one. Anyone have any helpful hints to installing the hood properly ?

Thanks!

you can do it with needle nose pliers and some brute strength, You can get it spread enough to bite into the groves then tap it flush with a hammer and a wood block
there are also split ring pliers that work alot better but not alot of people have em, i got lucky and the gun club had a pair, they are alot easier

Just add a middle size screwdriver to the mix and no brute strenght required. Just insert the blade of the screwdriver at the sviwel point of the pliers to spread them apart friction will keep it in place. And guide the hood in place on the front sight base (it must the later Post-1940 style base with grooves on it) and realease the screwdriver from the pliers.

With the help of my brother, I managed to get the sight hood on and it fits properly. While I was getting the hood into the grooves cut in the front sight base, I must have moved the front sight blade a bit as it is pushed to one side. Any suggestions on how to center the blade again ?

Nuts, I was hoping I could adjust the sight without taking the hood off. It sure was a pain to install, even with a second pair of hands. I can understand why the Soviets didn't bother to reinstall them.

I hope, with the help of this snap ring pliers, that this can be done by one person ?

Edit: Now that I found a picture of the tool, I think my parents have one buried away in their garage. The one issue I ran into with regular needle nose pliers is that the sight hood would turn 90 degrees left or right when I used the pliers in conjunction with the screw driver method. Could someone give me a quick run down of how to use the snap ring pliers properly when installing the hood ?

Thank you for the help, it saves alot of stress trying to figure it on my own.

Nabs,

Get the Reversible Snap Ring Pliers, also works on a G/K43 for the Internal Snap Ring at the back of the Receiver and the for Sight Hood.

When you have the right tool for the job, it makes it alot easier...
no damage, no cuts, no bandaids!

Ok, I understand now, it is the opposite motion I was having to do with the needle nose pliers (looks a heck of a lot easier too!). Thank you for the pictures as well, they really help. I am sure I have that tool already kicking around, I will have a look for it, give the process a shot, and report back (this Kar98k looks extremely good with the sight hood on her again!).
