How to install a plug

Well I'm still trying to figure out how to plug my old Remington 11-48. I cut a length of 5/8" diam PVC pipe. That's close to the diamater of a 12 GA.and the length of 2 x 2-3/4" shells. I loaded it into the receiver and it fits fine. However after the 3 shells are ejected the plastic gets jammed in the receiver. Now when I asked this question some time ago I got replies like"just an ordinary dowell would work fine". Well I'm no gunsmith. So what am I doing wrong? Have I missed something? I can't figure out how to do this properly. Should I invest in a proper plastic plug? Is this possibly a non typical installation? Any ideas or comments would be welcome.

Hi. You don't have the mag follower installed. Part # 46.

You just pop out the mag spring retainer, drop the plug(dowel, pvc pipe or anything else long enough to allow only 2 rounds into the mag. Used a twig one time on my 870.) into the tube and replace the retainer, but the follower has to be there.
 
IMHO, just get a Butler Creek plug (around $6+tax), cut to required size.....it is designed for that purpose, fits well and one doesn't have to worry about fit or moisture in the case of a wooden dowel.

I had installed one in an 870 without adjusting length......that way, the tube mag only accommodated a single 2 3/4in shell plus one in the chamber (suited me well :)).

Thanks for the blow up. Actually the mag follower is there. That'swhat's pushing the plug back out. I may opt out for the Butler Creek plug eventually. Thanks.
 
The plug goes on the opposite side of the follower from the shells. Put it in the other end of the tube and it'll be fine.

I wouldn't worry about buying a purpose made plug if you already have one made up.
 
Looks too big of a diameter to me and may jam. Here is an original from a 12ga 1148. It is only 7/16" diameter on the small turning.
As the boys say remove the cap on the end of the magazine tube? Unscrew it. Then, there should be a stop at the end of the tube holding the spring in. Take a screwdriver and pry it out, holding your hand over the end to catch the spring. Then, put the plug in the end of the spring, put the stop back in, and screw on the cap.

Well that's what I finally realized. I removed the spring cap, which at first I couldn't understand how it came out. It was just pressed fit. Easy to pop out. Put in the pvc pipe and tried it out. So now it holds 2 in the magazine and 1 in the chamber.
