Im big on iron sights. If you train yourself to shoot well with iron sights you are a better all around shooter. I find scopes distracting. Its the same philosophy with photography. I prefer a Leica rangefinder camera to a nikon or canon SLR. I'd rather look at what im shooting at then look at a piece of glass.
Just tested my 25 yard battle zero at the 200 yard range yesterday.... Vbulls on the figure 12/59 type B target. Holding at 6 o'clock on the bottom of the target was the easiest sight picture. It's very encouraging for this summer with irons. I'm curious what what my sight picture will be at 500m. Hopefully it won't be as bad I imagine it to be...tiny.
My TRW M14 and now my Springfield M1A are the best military rifles I have owned. That is partly due to the excellent sights that they are equiped with. Adjusting them for range is no different than a tacticle scope. Find your zero, move the turrets and remember your MOA adjustments for varied ranges.
The long sight radius does not hurt at all either. Although I had a gen III mount and an ART IV scope on the M14 I have resisted the urge to put one on the M1A. That's what Rem 700's are for. Truly a riflemans rifle.
7.62X51 NATO M80 Ball.
T65 147gr @2750fps which is roughly equal to the old .30cal (.30-06)
I have never noticed a difference when using 150gr bullets.
Unless you're planning a trip to Camp Perry this wont matter
