How to make a pin smaller

Hi,

I have a "heavy duty" 4x20 roll pin that won't fit properly in my M1-22's trigger assembly. With significant effort I can only get it about 75% of the way in from both directions.

Is there a way to make the pin diameter smaller so it will actually fit? I used gun oil to try to get it in to no avail. I also used WD40 to get the pin out and put it back in, but that didn't work.

Spin it in a drill or dremmel and carefully polish/sand/file it down. Maybe you just need more support where it's going? They're supposed to be pretty snug
 
you should check that the pin is not a 3/16 x 3/4, sometimes they get mixed up, would not recomend making it smaller though it will reduce but are you sure its going in straight, seems if it goes 75% way thro from both sides its not aligned with both sides, after this a good chance the inside of the hole has a burr, run a drill thro to ensude the hole is aligned and move the burr

The first thing I would ask, is, is the pin supposed to be tapered?

If not, take a single cut fine file to the pin, as it spins in a drill press or hand drill and sort out what is needed.
 
Roll pins are spring steel designed to collapse to fit a hole. the amount one can collapse is governed by the two edges of the pin colliding...use a dremmel tool grinding wheel or a 3 sided file ( if it will cut the pin steel) to remove some metal on the inside of the join line so the pin can collapse a bit more.
 
Are you sure it’s the right pin? Are you using the right roll-pin punch to move it? The wrong one will flare the back end open and stop it from moving.
 
He says 4x20. Since it's a Benelli it's certainly metric. are you sure that its properly lined up all the way through or that the hole isn't burred. a 5/32 pin is about .001 smaller and should work. but if it goes in 3/4 of the way I'm leaning towards alignment. Usually when lining up pieces like that I use a slave pin. A drill bit slightly smaller than the hole. Put that in all the way through and leave it in place. Use the roll pin to push the slave pin out and that should keep everything aligned. As said also give the pin a slight polish
