Hello as the title says, I tried searching this sight and the rcmp site, to no avail. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

make sure the gun is unloaded .close the action and insert a cleaning rod or wooden dowel down the barrel from the muzzle end as far as it will go then mark the rod at that point .measure and that is the barrel length. add ons like flash hiders etc.do not count in overall length .

I did a verify last year, with a permanent muzzle brake attached to a new custom barrel
on a Ruger #1 for a club member.
I called the CFC verifiers help line to ask about the muzzle brake,
and she said it counted in the over all length as it was silver soldered on.
When in doubt with ad ons like muzzle brakes and flash hiders,
be safe and call.

As defined, any attachment does not count as part of the measurement of the barrel, doesn't matter how it's attached. Barrel length is, the length of the rifled portion of the barrel including the chamber but excluding any attachment.
Any time you get info from these people, get a name, or get the information in writing, what she told you could make you a criminal and you have no way of proving that you were told what she told you!!!

I was waiting on hold with the CFC the other day and one of their "hold announcements" came on and it mentioned the same method of measuring. Close the action (make sure it's unloaded first of course) and push a cleaning rod down the barrel. Once it stops make a mark on the rod and then measure the rod.

Easy peasy...

Every manufactures use a different standard according to my instructors
Just like there is no standard measurement for ammos.
50ae vs 50bmg
Are they the same size?
LOL

50ae and 50bmg have the same bullet diameter (might be .1" off i think..), but the CASE is whats different. 50ae is primarily a pistol round, where 50bmg is a rifle or MG round. this wouldve been covered in your firearms safety course (the difference between bullet/cartridge types)

as for the barrel LENGTHS, it does include the chamber? im chopping a barrel down to 18.5" next week!

I think you should see a gunsmith instead.
If you give us the model name, may be we can help.
Highly unlikely you can answer your question :<
Gunsmith will be your answer

In otherwise, we are not pro enough to answer ur question.

Ok up to now - lots of leeway for a new member but now I have to say it's time for you to start looking and listening and thinking before posting as you obviously do not have a lot of experience in either the English language or firearms that I can see.

There are a lot of experts here on CGN but you wouldn't know that yet. That's why it's better to ask questions but not offer advice on things you don't know. People will always have patience and time for information seekers rather than dis-information givers. I see from one of your other posts that you are from China. Maybe a couple of our many expert Asian members can PM and help you understand the etiquette of posting so everyone can benefit from your input.

My comments are meant to be helpful & hopefully taken that way,
Miike

So then if the muzzle device is permanently fixed does it only count for OAL length and NOT barrel length ?

Barrel length does not include devices attached to the barrel. Ie muzzle brakes.

Overall length is from one end of the firearm to the other in its most collapsed, fire-able state.

I'm sure someone will copy and paste the legal version

Criminal Code section 84:

Barrel length

(2) For the purposes of this Part, the length of a barrel of a firearm is

(a) in the case of a revolver, the distance from the muzzle of the barrel to the breach end immediately in front of the cylinder, and

(b) in any other case, the distance from the muzzle of the barrel to and including the chamber,

but does not include the length of any component, part or accessory including any component, part or accessory designed or intended to suppress the muzzle flash or reduce recoil.

AFAIK, "overall length" is not defined in either the criminal code or the regulations. Basic definition for "overall" is "taking everything into account", so that would include butt spacers and anything attached to the muzzle (anything you need a tool to detach). Ravohs had a good concept for it, I think: shortest length of the firearm in its fire-able state.

In terms of say..an 870 barrel, does it start at the chamber, or is the extra side part that locks it into the receiver counted? And for handgun barrels, feed ramp included as the entire piece of metal is the barrel?
