How to Participate in Competitions in Ontario

I'm a beginner when it comes to shooting and would like to participate in some competitions (not large ones that take months of planning and lots of money, but rather a Saturday thing with a small or no fee). I just don't know what is out there and in my area. I am thinking I will drive up to an hour from Lindsay, Ontario or I could stay at a friends place in the gta area

I have a 303 lee enfield #4mk2(full wood)
I have a 308 savage 99
I have a 22lr rifle
I have a .177 pellet

I'm guessing this allows me to shoot in some competitions but I'm not sure.

On a side note, my enfield has a 'regulated by fulton', I can only guess it means it has the ability to be more accurate?

A Regulated rifle means it passed through the Fulton's gunshop on Bisley Camp in England. It has been inspected and modified where required. That is, unless Bubba has taken parts like the Parker Hale back sight off or cut it down for a hunting rifle. It is not necessarily more valuable, only capable of greater accuracy.

There are several clubs that host military surplus rifle matches. Keep your eyes open, and jump in. BTW, the guys in the Operational Shooting Association (OSA) shoot on a private range near Kinmount.

Conclusion to responses:

ORA-went to there website and looked at the calender, I couldn't find most places listed in location. Kingston is to far for me and I couldn't find the mentioned Bordon...a lot of mons (couldn't find where it is).
but to be involved I need to pay $20 each time or $50 annual fee on top of a dcra annual membership of $192 for me which would only last till the end of this year.
This is a little to pricey for me as a beginner shooter in final year of university on top of all the other firearm costs(gun club, ammo, hunting licenses).

OSA-couldn't really find any information on it except a private secret club in a purposely unspecified location in haliburton county has something to do with OSA. This is really close to me and would be great if I could find more information on it. Looking at the prices of the clubs offerings, I could see this being possibly out of my budget. :(

LUSM- Very tempting, just wish it was a little closer(3.5hrs away). $40 +ammo (60 cartridges per round). Generally 100yrds sometimes 200yrds. Free lunch. Requires bipod(Don't own one of these and never shot off one), not sandbag etc... If this was closer, I would take my 22 and make a cheap bipod attachment to meet their specifications.

Mons range is at Base Borden. Borden is just southwest of Barrie.

I think urban sniper matches at Listowel use centre fire rifles.

You might be able to borrow a piece of equipment at a match. Most people are pretty willing to help out a new shooter.

I'm not interested in competing as much as I am interested in getting out to shoot. I did a 12 hour plus trip in 11.5 hours (one way) to shoot 1,000 yards. Meeting the people, seeing the scenery was well worth it to me.
 
Simple fact, shooting cost money. Membership, entry fees, rifles, scopes, primers, powder and bullets all cost money. Add a spotting scope, travel, lodging, meals... it isn't cheap by any means.
Want to get into competitive air rifle shooting? Look at spending about $3000 to get all the stuff you need.
Smallbore, about the same but instead of $12 for a tin of match pellets, look at $130 for a brick (500 round) of .22 Eley.
Fullbore or F Class could set you back $3000-$4000 for just a rifle.

This is going whole hog on some of the best rifles and equipment on the market. There are ways to get into it much cheaper.

The ORA has Introductory Days. The next one is at Mons range at CFB Borden on Oct 20. Spend the $30 and a lot of your questions will be answered.
 
From what I can see, that event Andy suggested and hosting is perfect for me. And I will finally get to see Ottawa.

cost $5 entrance.
ammo(cost happens no matter what)
price of gas, $50 both ways(love the diesel)
and I will drive home after the event to save money on a hotel.

I have to wait to see if my firearm(s) are allowed, then I have to quickly get to the range today as I have only shot 2 rounds through each only to make sure they worked years ago(inheritance).

Maybe when I am done getting my degree, have a job, house etc...would I think about spending $3k on a firearm/event. But as I am still new to the whole sport I couldn't even think of saying yes to that.

I have a 22lr rifle - good for Open (but not recommended)

"...couldn't find the mentioned Bordon..." CFB Borden. Go to Mapquest and search for Angus, Ont. On the aerial image, the Mons range is between the Lisle label and the Canadian Forces Base Borden label. It's a fairly long drive from the Lindsay area though. Listowel is even farther.
As mentioned it's going to cost some money. Look into the Peterborough Rod and Gun Club, if there isn't something closer. 45 minute drive. It's at 608 Division Road. 705-742-6845 valliant@pfga.ca
 
The EOHC event went very well. Almost 30 competitors in both the "Rifle" and "Open" Division and 10 in the "Handgun".

No pre-registration was required, there was no pressure, and several Door Prizes including a Canadian - marked Enfield Model of 1917 (worth about $500) were given out in a draw - everyone agreed that it was a $5 well spent.

If you check on the ORA website http://www.ontariorifleassociation.org/
strangely enough under the topic "more info" you'll find maps/directions to all the ranges with the exception of Connaught in Ottawa. A map used to exist for the Connaght range as I have a copy. Must've got lost in the shuffle somehow. Still Mike does a good job of keeping the site up-to-date. The rest of the ranges are listed with maps I just checked.
 
I feel your frustration too...

I live in Kingston, and have joined the ORA specifically to get into some matches....

There is nothing out here... the closest is Borden... the CFB Kingston range was supposed to be available to ORA people, but we haven't been able to get the required 5 guys out to shoot once all year...

Perhaps we need a thread in here... advertising events ahead of time... there could be a thread for each province...

I too would like to shoot, but too often see these threads of "look at the results of this shoot" after the fact...

I have been doing the rimfire postal matches on here just to try to keep involved, but I would really like to get my centerfire rifles out for a good stretch

If you are an ORA member the schedule was posted on the web page back around April. Something like 78 events at all the ranges. It is sad Kingston can't get 5 guys out to a practice. We have the opposite problem down here in SW Ont. Lots of guys want to shoot but range time in lacking.
I have posted many of the shoot in advance here on Gunnutz, but get very few takers, except for the regular competitors.
Everybody on this forum has a rifle that will shoot 1/4 MOA all day long shooting Winchester White Box, never seen any of them at a match yet to prove it.
Unless you want to shoot 100-300 yards at your local club, you have to travel to the shoots. Some of us are crazy enough to leave the house at 3:30 am to get to a shoot in Borden for 8:30am.

I'll extend an invitation... I shoot at FRPC on McAdoo's Lane...

If you ever want to shoot when I'm there, I'd be happy to bring you to the club and let you use my rifle... I won't be able to teach you anything... I'm still trying to learn myself...

My beef is not with the ORA... they are organizing lots of stuff... I'm just disappointed that I joined, bought a rifle to learn how to shoot long range... and then couldn't practice... I was very hesitant to compete seeing as the longest I have ever shot it was 300m, the limit of our range, and thus haven't learned to really read the wind, etc... I even went to the long range training session in Burlington... it was a long drive, but well worth it... I was told that the program was going to be brought to Kingston, so didn't go back to Burlington... sadly... nope... Borden is an awefully long way to drive...

It looks like I'll be doing a bit of driving next year... Too bad I couldn't just go to CFB Kingston for practice sessions...
