Finally got some motivation and did mine today, took some pics as I went along in case anyone wants a cheap and easy way to do it. This was originally done by USRanger85 and posted in the M&P thread, I just followed his idea and compiled it with pics.

What you need:
1 Prohibited Device.
1 Standard issue metal coat hanger.
Epoxy glue.
Drill with a 3/32 bit.
Tape measure.

Step 1:

Take your tape measure and from the top of the follower measure 4in down the spin and mark, this will allow you to fit exactly 10 rounds (and will load on a closed bolt but takes a bit more effort to seat the mag). If you want your mag to hold 10.5 rounds so you can easily load on a closed bolt measure 4.25in from the top of the follower, I've since done this with my three mags.

Step 2:

With a 3/32 bit take your drill and make a hole directly in the centre of the spine. You can go all the way through the mag if you choose, I went about halfway through the other side so the hanger has a place to sit and not move and it only leaves one visible hole.

Step 3:

With the hole drilled you need to cut the appropriate size piece of hanger. I didn't measure mine unfortunately. Just take a length of hanger and run it through the hole, use a marker to mark where to cut.

Step 4:

Insert the piece of hanger and seal the end with some Epoxy. Let it dry and sand the end to make it flush and smooth. That's it.

I'm hoping this is the last time I ever have to pin mags. I couldn't remember where Rangers post was so I did this all from scratch (I found his post after... it was on the 2nd last page!) the only thing I remember was someone used a metal coat hanger to pin them. The first mag I did has 3 holes in the spin from me testing. First time I measured from where the last round was not where the following ended so that was a waste :p Second attempt I could fit 9 rounds in and third was a charm! So my other two mags were perfect :D

I take it the length on the 15-22 makes it a restricted thus the 10 round maximum?

know lots of guys with regular old 10-22's and 25 rounders. no limit on rimfire unless restricted?

It has nothing to do with restricted status of the firearm. The magazines were classified as handgun magazines (and therefore restricted to 10). For more information read the following thread.

Yes you are right Homer76....Sadly you are right. The M&P 15-22 has been arbitrarily classified as a handgun:confused: (or at least its magazines) I expect that they are going to re-classify my CZ-858 (non restricted) as something ultra dangerous and mandate hand feeding cartridges one by one any day now.

I can not believe people gets paid money to decide that the M&P 15-22 is somehow more dangerous than my SR-22 or Charger

I dont get it, that magazine does not look like it can fit in a hand gun, way too much of a curve in it and way too big.
What hand gun can that magazine fit into ?
or am I missing something here ?

Yeah the picture posted above is the "pistol" version so only 10 rounds. Hopefully someone makes aftermarket 25 round magazines soon.

Thats the sad part.... The M&P 15-22P (Pistol) has to have it's mags pinned to 10 ^^ but the Ruger Charger (Pistol) doesn't have to and has a 25 round mag VV
GO FIGURE???

That would be because Ruger has never made a 25 round magazine that fits the 10/22.

Or was that not perfectly clear before?

That's the only reason. The 25 round mag in the Charger, is an aftermarket mag, made to fit a rifle, so it does not get 'prohib' status.

If Ruger had made a 25 round mag, then sold it with the Charger, it would be in the same boat as the S&W.

Chalk up another win for th 10/22 and aftermarket support!

Cheers

Thanks for the clarification. Further proof that our firearm laws were drafted by people with no knowledge of firearms. I feel sad for the poor soul that gets smacked with a criminal charge for possess a prohibited device while teaching his kid how to shoot a .22
Bureaucracy is going to kill this sport:(

.22 shouldnt have any stupid limits. hi capacity mags are stupid so who cares, but if a pistol was designed to hold 15 it should hold 15 if it was designed to hold 8 it should hold 8. Rifle designed to hold 20 should hold 20... Who the F _ _ K came up with this Dumb S _ _ T? 10 rounds 5 rounds...i hope these idiots die of some gross disease and theit nuts fall off..
ok i feel better now

here is alternate for short mags:

Cut the end of the mag off, you will keep the end piece so make sure its straight:

Have to cut a bit of the mag end to allow spring to be inserted/removed (circled red), superglue this piece back on after making your 2nd cut further up the mag:

Finished mag and inserted into rifle:

Cutting the spring is not necessary for this modification.

so basically the same reason you can get 10rnd ar mags is the same reason you have to pin these mags? Guess you win some and you lose some. Makes absolutely no sense but I guess that is how the gov't always has worked...
