How to plan a moose hunt

modify

I will modify my post or qualify I should say, we can't shoot cows or calves here, they are protected (no kevlar jokes please). So we are only shooting mature or nearly mature bulls which will run from 1000-2000 lbs, so they truly are a daunting task, after they hit the ground. Our fully mature bulls will go nearly 8 feet at the withers, can carry over 6 feet of antler and weigh in at a ton. Believe me the funs over, right after that loud bang !!!

I'd go moose hunting again if we could shoot calves !!!

And then there is the 3000 lb bull bison..........even less fun!!!!

Here is one thing that we do when you start talking about moose hunting. We go to an estabished camp and stayed in cabins. Yup, we rough it with hot showers and electric heat, oven, microwave etc. So the Cabin cost X amount per person. Collect that money at your first meeting. This money is non-refundable unless you have a good reason like your own death. This will stop guys from backing out a couple weeks before.

Next meeting, elect a couple guys to look after groceries before you leave home and collect money again. Plan your meals ahead of time. We use groups of 2 guys to prepare the days meal each day. Everyone takes a turn. Crock pots work really well for this, throw it in the pot in the morning and come back to camp for a hot meal at the end of the day.

On the day you leave collect cash from everyone for fuel and have one guy in charge of it. This way everyone pays the same for fuel as a group. Then there is no #####ing because one guy filled up a truck that only cost $85 and the other guy in the same truck cost $105 at the next full up. It all come out of the same pot for the group.
If there is any gas money left over at the end of the trip, split it up between the truck owners for an oil change.
We drag up a freezer in the trailer and have our animal cut and wrapped up there.

Good advice right here.

Exactly the reason all the food and gas money is pooled into the same pots. No problems if you are a CGA, but we like to keep it simple. The only money we don't pool before we go is for butchering. But we settle up as a group when we pick up the meat. And of course everyone pays for their own meals up and back.

When I moose hunt, I lke camp to be not so comfy. That keeps my in the bush. I like the bush to be more comfy than usual, so I bring a lawn chair and sometimes a book. Irish setter boots so my feet stay dry and comfy, this gets me off my quad. A single burner stove, to have a warm lunch in the field or a coffee to outsmart the 3:00 wall. A GPS will help you connect all the watersheds. If there's lots of hunters, figure out what they are doing and do something different. Besides all the usual equipment, axe, stove, blah, blah, bring spare tires, one more than you think for every piece of equipment. This is overlooked more than anything. And remember that a dead moose will float if you don't cut him open, most boats can drag him easier than haul him.:sniper:
