Hi all,

I just got a Mossberg shotgun and I am looking to get out for turkey season. I think the magazine capacity is either 3+1 or 4+1.

I am not sure how to plug the tube so that it only holds 2+1 for hunting in Ontario. Any advice?

I have heard a piece of dowel works well, but don't know how to proceed.

Thanks

I believe you can plug the mag to the desired limit with a 1/2" hardwood dowel. inner diametre of the mag spring will tell what actual diametre you can use. Look a schematic on the inter net and will show the way things lay out.
This will also show you how to access the gun for a thorough cleaning. A site called shotgun world is a great resource to tap.
cheers Darryl

Thought now-a-days most new guns came with one provided by the manufacturer?

Anyway, Butler Creek company offers a (after market) plastic plug - likely available at most guns shops. I picked one up last year for aprox $4.99 ....the plastic would be better as that won't attract moisture.

Hmmm. When I bought my mossberg it came with a "plug". All there was to it was a piece of 3/8" dowel with a couple little o-rings around the ends to keep it from rattling.

I’ve never plugged one, but I have unplugged a few (I like older guns). I have seen original Winchester model 12 plugs that were a dowel with slightly rounded ends and about half an inch in diameter. I’ve seen guns that just have old piece of dowel in the tube. I had one that had a small diameter piece of what looked like garden hose in it. (It could have been a brake line or something.) The bottom line is it doesn’t have to be fancy.

What I would do is this:
Determine your magazine capacity by either checking the manual or seeing how many shells you can load (do this in a safe place).
Figure out how many shells you need to restrict (2 for a 4 round magazine, 1 for a 3 round)
Get a half inch piece of dowel or tubing, or anything that will not compress and will not scratch the magazine, and cut it for 2.5 inches for each shell you want to restrict. (2.5 inches for 1 shell, 5 for 2 etc.)
Pull the magazine cap off, and drop this inside the spring, put the cap back on.
Go back in your safe place and try to load in three shells. If you get 2 and not 3 you are good to go. If you get more or less, adjust your dowel.

Have you tried putting more than 2 rounds in the mag? As Exocet said, Mossbergs (and most other shotguns) come with the plug in place from the factory. If it is missing for some reason, a piece of 1/4" dowel is what you need (larger diameters will not fit).
