How does one practice IDPA or anyother of the practical pistol shooting sports. We just ordered our first handgun and I would like to take my blackbadge and go into IDPA or productive pistol shooting.
But how do you guys practice at the range?

Find out when a top notch shooter is practising and spy on them:p

Dry fire/draws/reloads at home are a good place to start. There are lots of good drills to go through at the range, but I don't know many of them. Maybe someone else will post some ideas, or a link to a site that lists drills.

I have not read it, but was thinking the book "Perfect Practice" might be worth picking up.

Hi,

Since you haven't taken the BB course yet, you (most likely) won't be able to do/practice anything IPSC-like (with a holster, forward of the line, etc).

So, for now, just learn and practice "bullseye" type shooting. Basically, you need to be able to use your gun to hit the target you're aiming at - no time limit first. Work on accuracy, while shooting your gun. Try one handed, try two handed (maybe have someone show you the few two handed stances, and you can pick one which feels best for you) - it will all look and feel boring, but it will develop the basics which will take you into IPSC, and which you'll then expand on to get better in action shooting. That's the high level summary... ;) If you can put all your shots on an 8.5x11" paper at 15-20 yards, with no time limit, that's usually a very good starting point for taking the BB course. If you can do it under some (relaxed) time limit, like, say, 10 shots in 30seconds, even better. You'll go far beyond that in the course and in your competitions, but for now, just work on the basics...

On Sunday Sept 17/ 06 ISL is holding an IPSC Match at Nanaimo Fish and Game on Nanaimo lakes Rd. Time is from 10 am till 3 ish pm. Come on out and meet some of us who like to shoot. Plenty of fun and there will be someone there to help you find a Black Badge course. Victoria Fish and Game located on top of the Malahat has a very active IPSC section and all ways welomes new shooters. See you Sunday... I'll be the guy wearin a 45

he's in BC most ranges out here don't make you take silly courses to be able to use a holster and have fun. Not like Ontario. (though we do have a couple that would fit in quite nicely back east).

Now, what holsters does everyone use for IPSC (want to go productive or duty pistol/no fancy stuff) or defence pistol shooting?

Im thinking about getting a uncle mikes kydex holster...

That'll do just fine. Until you're sure you want to invest in competitive shooting, get the cheapest holster that's legal. Once you've had a chance to see what other people are using, you might pick something different.
