How to properly align Leupold STD rings?

Hey everyone,

I am currently scoping my brothers Savage 10FP, and I am need of a bit of help. I got the bases down nice and tight, and now I am putting the rings on. I have Leupold STD bases and Leupold STD rings.

Lacking a 1 inch dowel, I used the end of a broom handle to turn the front ring in. It turned in fine, and I mounted my scope, but I could see that my scope wasn't lined up correctly, it was pointing a little bit right. I wasn't sure if this was the back ring or the front ring, so I tried to go a bit farther with the front ring. Now I have overcorrected, which I didn't even know was possible with that front base, and I went past the center point so that if you look down the barrel, the ring will be turned slightly left.

I am wondering, is there any way to ensure that it is aligned perfectly on center? I thought that it was important to have them aligned properly, but it seems so hard to get both rings in the exact right spot by eye, and to make sure they are centered down the barrel.

Do I just have to keep wiggling and eyeballing it? I have mounted other scopes before, but it has always been weaver..

Thanks

best way to do it is with a set of allignment bars. 2 pieces lets you line up the front and rear so that they are square. some 1" hardwood dowel might also work. Just keep playing with it. set the front ring (dovetailed) square to the base. Similarly with the rear screw base, find center, keep it straight and tighten a couple turns each side and it should bring you in. you do not want any deflection in the offset of the rings or to try and correct the deflection by clamping the scope into the rings. good way to bugger a scope.

The thing is, when I set up the dovetailed ring square to the base, to my eye, it really seems as if it is angled to the right. By this I mean, I need to angle it to the left slightly in order for it to be lined up with the barrel. Maybe my eyes are messing with me though.

My trouble is actually 'finding center'.

I will go to Home Hardware tomorrow and get a 1" dowel.

Btw, thanks for the Supernova gunpro, can't wait to get it =)
