How do I remove the splinter fore end wood from an English style side by side shotgun? This is so I can refinish the wood properly. It has the push-button latch mechanism, not the lever style. Thanks.

Remove the forend from the gun. Look inside, you will see the screws which secure the wood to the forend iron. Don't break any wood removing the iron. Be careful. A bad refinish does not enhance value.

Grouse man: Check to see if there are any additional screws that go through the hinge area into the end of the wood. Remove if there are . You may have to take a small brass punch to remove the iron, very carefully and evenly. Drift it rearward if there are no visible locks into the wood caused by the shape of the iron. A picture or two of the fore end would help us here if you can post them.

There is only the one screw. I started tapping it out using a wooden dowel braced against part of the latch, and it is beginning to back the iron out. I just need to pick up a real brass drift to finish this properly. Thanks for the tip.
