How to replace USP recoil spring

The recoil spring in my USP Tactical is getting pretty soft, I've put 5000+ rounds through it. I bet primer only loads would cycle the slide at this point :)

How hard is it to change the spring yourself? There's that little C-shaped clip thing on the end of the recoil assembly, is it as simple as taking that off and sliding the spring off, then putting a new spring on? What's the best way to get that C-shaped thing off?

Also, I don't see USP-T springs listed on wolf springs or elsewhere, does the USP-T use the same spring as a USP 45?

yeah I think when you do it you need new C clips as well. Odd that it is soft at 5k..im at 12K and mine is ok..
 
Nichols actually had the springs in stock when I needed some. They are a ##### to replace, and you will need a new c clip or two (they can get launched easily while you are trying to clip them on.

Can't you just buy the complete assemply? Or is it much more expensive?

Pull a bedsheet over your head before you start. When (not if) the spring launches, it will simply hit the sheet and fall to the floor at your feet (most times ;))

At 16K my springs are all OK. 5K seems barely broken in.
 
i agree, my 9mm recoil assembly has a total combined round count of 16,000rs + at least.

Yes it is much more expensive.

For those that think they can go forever on the original spring, keep in mind that a replacement is cheap insurance. It is a good practice to replace springs after 5,000rds. I have a box full of cracked USP slides, and changing springs seems to extend their lifespan somewhat.
 
Plus I would think the Recoil spring for a 230gr .45 would have different requirements than 124gr 9mm. My gun takes more of a beating when I use factory 147gr ammo.

How many rounds, and are they the stainless or regular slides??? :eek:
 
do you think the variability in the shooters wrist strength adds extra stress to you range guns? Sort of sets it up for stress cracks?
