How to save money and make your own 1oz slugs!

Sorry guy that mould is FRICKI+ hot. The lead pot is just letting the lead out by drip drip drip drip. I mean slow drips. I had the pot turned right up so I KNOW the lead is hot.

I even tried heating it up with a torch to make sure it was hot. The lead just not flowing. I will have to heat it and dump the lead to see what is happening with the spigot.

on my 20lb pot there is a screw which is used to control the flow, it takes about 2 seconds to fill the 1oz slug mold

They have next to no penetration since they are essentially glasser rounds and burst apart when they hit anything hard. For punching paper for fun it works well but for destroying broken/used electronics and appliances they punch through one layer of sheet metal and then just burst. I find I can debark trees really well with wax slugs as I guess they penetrate on one spot and a lot of the force goes into the surrounding area under the bark.

Every vid I have seen on the subject indicates otherwise.

How bout a cinder block:

Um... none of the wax slugs go "clean through" the 4x4's. They all go in part way and cause a blow out in the back. Other than the one graze none of the wax slugs actually passed through the 4x4's. It looks like they are getting 2-1/2" to 3" of actual penetration which is most likely accounted by the fact they are using dry lumber. Against fresh cut 4" tree limb sections I usually only get about 1-1/2" of actual penetration at point of impact and a lot of spalling under the bark.

The 1oz slug passes through the 4x4 and keeps going (though probably somewhat deformed and most likely tumbling.)

Against the cinder block the wax slugs, again, didn't "penetrate" the cinder block but just blew it to bits. It hits, goes splat, and dumps all of its kinetic energy into the block which blows it to bits. There is nothing coming out the other side but some loose lead shot and cinder block chunks propelled by the impact.

The point was they seem to blow stuff up just fine.

There are other vidoes shooting various things and the slugs punch clean through.

For plinking, which is what I originally stated these are more than adequate, and out to 25 m provide decent enough accuracy.

Obviously for anything but plinking these wouldn't be my choice, but they shouldn't be written off as the poster made it seem.

Get a lead thermometer, they are worth the expense and then you always know what your pot temperature is. The calibration markings on the lee rheostat doesn't mean anything.

Even if your pot is running at the right temperature the valve might not be warmed up enough. Personally i found it easier to use a Lyman ladle - less pissing around because a ladle doesn't plug up and more bullets per hour.

The downside is that ladling takes more hand and wrist strength and some people will find it harder or impossible because of that. Running a 4C mould punching out 250 gr boolits with a ladle for a couple hours will give you forearms like popeye if you do it regularly.
