A week ago I received my first pistol; a 75B SP01 Shadow. In the future I would like to try my hand in PPC and maybe IPSC. What I am wondering is how do I begin to purchase a holster? Whats good? What should I be looking for?

i dont shoot ipsc but i'd like to aswell. one thing i do know about holsters is when your picking one out, you'll want to try and see if it fits.. the retention level? how easy it is to pull out of the holster? ergonomics of the holster?

Most of the cops are using Sarfariland holsters.

Have a look on Youtube - lots of good info there - I've got a couple of their thigh rigs (tactical / military drop holster) and they work great.

Hope this helps - Abby

OP, look at the regs of the organizations you want to compete in and see what they have for holster/equipment rules. There is no point in buying a holster that is illegal for your intended use... FWIW, I like Bladetech for kydex holsters.

Well first, decide if you want a paddle style or a belt loop style holster. Paddle is easier to take on and off but some say you lose grip of it staying on your pants when drawing compared to a belt which is locked in. Then decide, how much retention you want to have (level 1, 2, or 3). Then I can help steer you in the right direction :) Let me know if cost if a issue too!

Just bring your pistol (unloaded of course) into the store, and try a bunch out! *sarcasm off* But I guess if the store also happens to have a gunsmith on staff, you should be able to bring it in if your ATT allows...

I guess you are talking about CPCA PPC matches. I 'm looking in the rule book right now and I don't see your pistol listed as allowable for the "duty pistol" competition. You would have to confirm it's eligibility with the CPCA. You could still compete in the Semi Automatic 1500 round. That competition involves shooting out to 50 yds, and some people use guns with adjustable sights. When it comes to holsters, any strongside holster could be used in the 1500 round but, if your gun is approved for duty pistol competition, you will have to have a Level II retention holster. That means two distinct "release" motions are required to draw the gun. My safariland holster requires me to roll the safety hood forward and then thumb another catch backwards to release the gun. Friction does NOT qualify as a level of retention although some holster manufacturers advertisments do consider friction to be one level of retention. the CPCA rule book is available in PDF on line.

Hope this helps---------Tim

"...PPC and maybe IPSC..." Two different shooting games with different rules.
"...Most of the cops..." Most cops never shoot their service piece except for what they jokingly call 'annual qualification'.

Tim,

Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer my question. The club I am a member at does a club level PPC competition every week. I think its the 1500. I probably wouldn't take it any further than that. If I decided to get into IPSC, I would obviously do more than club level stuff.

Thanks for all the information.
