How to select a Red Rifle?

So I'm considering an SVT 40 in my short list of possible new-to-me rifles. It's the only one on my list that is previously enjoyed, and I have some concerns. I know of a few people that have purchased old red rifles, and the quality was quite varied. Some were straight shooters. Others somewhat inaccurate. The finish quality was quite varied.

Finish quality is one thing, but I'd hate to buy one and have it need a bunch of work to enjoy the thing. Are there any specific areas of the SVT that should be inspected prior to purchase? Any common issues that a person should be aware of and budget for when buying one of these pieces?

Thanks for your help,.

Check the bore first, should be shiny and smooth, from one end too the other. And just inspect for general surface rust.

From there just pick one you like. As long as the mag is pinned and not cut!
