It would depend on whether the person was wearing a ball cap or not, if they were likely not.

I don't know if you're serious or ironic, but an ar is accurate and have an respectable reliability. Maybe not as an ak, because an AR15 need to be clean to be reliable.

In the CF, on an exercice, my buddy decided to torture test a C7A2. 11 30 rounds mag in a row, on full-auto, without any jam or failure. I was scared for the rifle but it survived. Black juice was flooding from the gas tube.

Now on exercice I avoid using the C7 number 11 ...
 
I wonder, though, is an AR suitable for bear defense, or would I be better off with a shotgun? What would you guys recommend as far as gun/ammo?
 
Since ar15 is a resteicted firearms, you can't take it in the wood for bear defense. And 5.56 is, IMO, are too weak to be suitable for bear defense. That's why Canadian Rangers are still using lee enfield for bear defense.

A semi-auto non-restricted high powered cartridge would be more suitable, such a 30-06. Or a 12ga 3 1/2 slug or buckshot. For bear defense, I would prefer a semi-auto, because under pressure, you may miss your first shot

Good points, but couldn't one get a wilderness ATT to carry an AR? As far as shotguns go, wouldn't a Side by Side be more reliable?

BTW, does anyone remember if there ever has been a bear defense thread on CGN? If so, what was the concensus????

I wonder if any definitive study has been done...

The russians did some testing of 7.62x25, 9x19 and .45ACP in submachine guns against bears. .45ACP was mostly a waste of time against the bear and made it mad. 9mm was moderately useful and the 7.62x25 was quite capable. The reason had to do with the faster rounds ability to break through the skull of the bear. I wish I could find the link but my google-fu is weak today. So would the high velocity of the 5.56 make it effective in a bear defense situation?
