How to Start a Deactivated Gun Collection in Canada

With WW2 historic guns like the Walther PP and PPK, the Mauser HSC, 1934 , Beretta 1934 and 1935 and lugers now being 12(6) dewats are the only way to own them and keep them from being melted down.
It isn't a good situation but it is the best some of us can do.

I would rather own a WW2 dewat than wish I had a 12(6) .32 and never own one.

I don't comprehend the hate for a dewat collection? We don't need a Liberal or NDP government to ruin our hobby/sport; we will destroy ourselves with petty infighting soon enough.

For someone who lives in the country and doesn't have an "official" range to use within reasonable distance, a pistol (or any restricted) gets shot the same amount as a Dewat. Yet I still own own a restricted and support others who do.

Its a fun and interesting bit of history to own.

lugers can be rebarreled

Dewat ?

My M38 wouldn't look the same without them ;)

Then it's a shooter, not collector piece.

And a welded up gun (modified) is more collectable than one with a new shootable barrel (modified)?

Two sides of the same coin. Neither is original as it once was. The dewat crowd seems to conveniently forget that their "original" dewat isn't so original either.

I'm not against dewat collecting. I have 2 of my own. What I don't like is why the dewat process even exists. Sad state of affairs.

If the Replica Models (Thompson, MP40, M16, 1911A1, etc) and Shoei Guns from Japan, (G43, MP44, FG42, etc) were still legal here,
I would think the price of the Dewats here would drop considerably.

In fact, you have to wonder, since none of those Replica Models/Shoei could ever fire a round, just like a dewat, who in the H*LL wrote the stupid laws!

I have no issues wih dewats themselves. I don't understand the prices. A welded up gun is more money than a functioning one?
The prices have nothing to do with functionality, it's entirely due to the amount of people that can legally purchase them. Anybody can buy a dewat while only a select few can purchase prohibs and the prices reflect this.

Step 1: Give guy money
Step 2: Receive dewat in exchange
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit

1) Build a time machine
2) Set time machine for mid 90's or before
3) Buy museum quality Deacts for reasonable price ($750 for complete Vickers and two transit cases)
4) Hold for two decades, HUGE profit

All my antiques are shootable or plan to be in the near future.

If one wishes to preserve history, I suggest we already are, because paying your taxes must somehow support a nearby public museum of early settlement/war history.

I am not paying twice to preserve non-firing examples that needlessly take up space in my house, thank you very much.

yeah but you can't handle museum pieces

They ruined Dewats for me by not allowing #### and click anymore. It's bad enough they prohibited them in the first place, then had to needlessly tighten dewat standards to take the fun out of owning them.

Well you start with Kim Campbell and Bill C-17 and add Chretien and Rock with C-68 and you are off to the races. I am sure they rushed that bill through just so it wouldn't be C-69 and we mutually got F**ked.

I have no interest in dewatts. I am a older fellow and I often wonder what happened that made the government unable to trust me with my crime free past. I still own full auto in the US, but I basically live here. 1 foot south of the border I am good to go,1 foot north and I am a criminal?
