I'm getting a birch-stocked 870 Express soon and I may replace the stock with a synthetic one.

I have looked at my 870 Wingmaster forend wood and for the life of me cannot figure out how it comes off. How does it come off?

Same with the butt stock. Do I remove the butt plate/recoil pad and is there a hole through it and a shaft with a nut?

Do I need a special tool to undo it?

A Phillips screwdriver for the 2 screws in the buttstock.

To remove the FE properly, there is a special wrench, but some people prefer for bugger up the retaining ring with needlenose pliers.

A long screwdriver for the buttstock. A special tool for the forend...... just about any gun smith/shop could change the forend over for you in a couple of minutes.

On the last 2 870's I have changed forestocks on, I was able to un-screw the retaining nut with my fingers after a spritz of lube. Yours might not be on that tight either.
