Hi guys,

I'm heading on my first moose hunt next week. I've got all my guns and gear but there's still one thing I need to do; learn how to talk moose. I bought a birch cone with witch I've been practicing a bit. If any of you guys know of a good website with sound bites I'd appreciate the link. Or any advice for that matter. I hear cow calls are the best...

Thanks,

Alex

Watch whatever moose calling vids you can find. There's some on YouTube.

Make sure to really choose your calling location well. Pay attention to wind, elevation, visibility etc, and very important is FRESH SIGN...

If you call in cover the moose will come more readily, but obviously will be harder for you to see.

I love to call from a slight elevation. This lets the call carry a bit better and gives you the advantage of better vision. I also like to have open or semi-open ground on the downwind side, since many bulls will try to come in downwind of you. If you get a bull hot enough, sometimes they will throw caution to the wind and come directly at you.

Do not over call. If a bull does answer your call, be sure to answer him immediately! They become wary immediately if you do not respond to their call. As they come in, make your calls shorter and quieter, the closer they get.

The most important thing, when calling moose is patience. The majority of guys that have trouble calling in moose, are guys that do not have the patience to wait on them. Many times the bull will not answer or appear for several hours after you call, which can be hard on the novice, impatient moose hunter.

Just tape yourself with a good case of the dry heaves....then practice repeating the sound effects after the cramps and diarrhea go away. You'll have 'em hanging their noses right over your shoulder.:D

Juice can caller

Look for info on a juice can caller.
Basically a large juice can, cut open one end. Punch a small hole in other end center. Tie a large shoe lace through the can. Swish water in can to wet lace. Pull the lace through your fingers to make sounds.
If calling near water, slowly pour water from the can into the water .
Sounds kinda hoaky, but it works like a damm.

I have had to move out of the way of moose comming in fast!

We used the cans and cow calling on our last moose hunt. Cans didn't bring anything in, but the cow call did!

Just cup your hands around your mouth while plugging your nose with your index fingers, then belt it out just like in the the Shockey video's.
