Hey guys after my safety being a little sticky on the way back OFF fire it had me thinking, How do you use the Mod 70 safety?Walk an stalk in SAFE (rearward) and slide all the way forward when u want to shoot?
Or
Stalk with safety in CENTER ?

Or only use the middle setting for unloading the rounds?.

Thanks
Wl

Personally, I walk in SAFE position. This locks the bolt and prevents, upon a rare occasion, a snag opening from a branch, vine, or clothing. If sitting or suspecting a shot opportunity, I place it in the middle position, to minimize movement and sound.

If I had a Model 70, I would keep the safety all the way on when hunting... Unloading I'd put it in the middle position... Safety off only when ready to shoot...

Cheers
Jay
P.S. WhelenLad, I got 35 Whelen reloading dies for Christmas... A new to me rifle is in the works... Gonna be my bear & moose thumper! HE HE, you're a bad influence with all your hunting posts! Chuckle!

The centre position was originally designed as a safe way to unload the rifle which is why most Pre-64 M70s simply fly through the middle position when pushed forward. It's not a defect, it's designed that way. walk around with the safety on SAFE (Rear), push forward to kill something.

Well I am glad to have worked that one out, when I was solo yesterday I had it in the middle an noted at one time the bolt was lifting, this is when I thought about it sometime and came up with the conclusion!

Btw. This is a Kimber but with the "Model 70 safety" hence the Question and I figured more properly have a Winchester!!!

Appreciate the response to what may of seemed a bit of a silly Question.

Jay! You won't be disappointed I don't think ! I would love to give an Elk/moose a crack with my Ruger .35w
You properly have many more Bullets available for ha to load up which would make it more versatile!

Enjoy and hope too see stories of your hunts

Cheers

Rarely ever hunt with a hot chamber here.

Empty chamber, uncocked, safety off. The M70 cocks on opening, so takes some effort to get open if carried 'hammer down'. Never had it come open on me and it is one quick motion to chamber a round as you lift the rifle to aim. Chamber to shoot or stalk.

I'm mystified by people who don't hunt with a round chambered. As far as I'm concerned that is the ONLY way to carry a rifle while you're hunting. When you need a rifle you need it right away. When you happen upon an animal that is not the time to try to open the bolt, chamber a round and then try to get a shot. Rifle comes up, safety goes off, critter hits the turf.

Safety on or off, chambered or not, no matter how you look at it, its all about muzzle control.
Many accidents have happened with thought to be safe rifles.

Exactly. Working the action is a sure way to spook the animal. The exception for me is if walking in with others then there is nothing chambered.

No great mystery.

We mainly hunt the mountains and foothills, I personally will not hunt with people who mountain hunt with a hot chamber.

If the animal is spotted far off, no problem, chamber a round and stalk. If its close and quick, I can get the rifle up and chambered plenty fast. Hasn't cost me an animal yet...

Do whatever works for you. You want to hunt with a hot chamber, no problem... we aren't hunting together. Knock yourself out.

Agreed...... Likely never hunted upland? And WHO hasn't done that?.....

Regardless of that, all of my rugers are mkII....three position as well.... I use the middle position under certain circumstances such as unloading (and almost never in a mag fed such as my scout).... Unless in a stand or sit expecting game where I will drift it to the middle of the hell of it...... One less click..... But that is just me and I am not a lawyer Hunter..... I am accutely aware of my firearm condition and strategy and have researched scenario long before a safety is disengaged and a shot is taken....
