How to use mod 70 safety

Well, if you don't carry it open, you'd have to have it loaded with the safety on...
Maybe tape or something could be used to hold the cartridges in...

The Krieghoff double's safety is also a cocking/decocking unit. Best of both worlds - loaded barrels, uncocked action...
 
I load up as soon as I hit the bush and put the rifle on "safe". As soon as I've reached my stand, the safety comes off and I'm ready to fire if something comes into any fire lane. If I have to move to another location, or I do a little push for a buddy, then the safety is on again. My Ruger has the 2 position tang safety which does a little "click" when engaged but is silent when it's pushed into the fire position. Much depends on whether you're stalking or sitting and your own particular familiarity with firearms. I believe in safety first, but within reason.
 
I am afraid of carrying live ammunition in the woods, so I bring a Lee loader with me.... if I see an animal I work up the appropriate load on the spot and chamber it and place the rifle on safe.....

At this point, if there is any daylight left, and the animal is still there I take out the owner's manual for my rifle and go through the "Ten commandments of firearms safety" just to get reacquainted..... Usually, this is enough to scare me away from a shot, so I just unload the rifle, pull the bullet, dump the powder and go home and make a coffee (decaf, because caffeine scares me), and log into gunnnutz.....

I usually have a round in the chamber and the safety on when I'm hunting. A loaded round and safety off while hunting?! That's a bit much for me and I don't see a need.

I wonder if we could add up total horn inches you've taken while carrying hot and what I've taken while carrying an empty chamber and see if that determines the best method? What do you think? Will that be fair?

Ahhhh.... a #### measuring contest..... Will likely lose badly as none of my Bears, coyotes, wolves, hogs or upland had horns.... well, there was that one jackalope but that was a store display and I would rather not talk about that incident......

This topic seems to have struck a chord with you for some reason, I usually really enjoy your posts but you seem somewhat aggressive in this thread.. any particular reason why? Bad experience with someone carrying a hot chamber perhaps?

Wow, this thread sucks.

I like the model 70 because it makes the bolt easy to strip.

I'm completely comfortable with the other designs of safeties.

If it's legal light, I'm not touching a vehicle, and not in camp, I've got one in the chamber, safety on, with the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

I went back and looked through.... The link you posted to campfire involved a rifle that never functioned properly in the first place.... I personally think it's every shooter's responsibility to ensure their firearm is in good condition and that the safety features are functional..... That being said, muzzle direction is of the utmost importance as well...

As for the 3 AD you mention, was the safety even on?.... There are far too many who carry hot and don't use their safety... we had a guy in camp nearly shoot his ear off while taking a wizz when he slung his rifle and the trigger caught on a button on his jacket.....

To be honest with you, I might see things your way if I hunted where you hunt, but spot and stalk style hunting for me involves small shooting windows in fairly dense bush with shots usually less than 40 yards... I don't have the time window you guys have to rack the bolt and chamber a round before taking a shot.... I'd be seeing a lot of white flags..... I also cut my teeth hunting upland, so hot chamber safety on has always been my way.....

I think it was mentioned early in the thread by the guys who carry chamber empty that they're referring to mountain pack hunts. I've hunted in the mountains a few times and always had the chamber empty, it just feels safer when climbing and crawling. Like you, if I'm hunting flat land back home, the rifle is generally loaded when walking, but I hunt alone 99% of the time.

You hit the nail on the head. Hunting on Vancouver Island isn't just thick, its steep, rocky and wet. Its hard to stay on your feet at times. Wearing caulk boots is common. Years ago I shot a deer, it ran a few steps and fell off a rock bluff. It took me 2hrs to get off that bluff and locate a deer that was only an 80 yd shot. The deer was so smashed up that I could only salvage the hind quarters. Lots of times I hunt with a hot chamber but when its rough I prefer not to. Its common sense.

Yeah, African Carry probably wouldn't make any more sense on Vancouver Island than having the rifle slung and unloaded makes any sense in the Zambezi Valley.

Yeah mate, but i try not too.. in those times the rifle is slung generally , hot and safety on.
Not because of drop Bears but moreso a scaredy cat of the 'wild dogs'.... which is only a smallll wolf for comparision sake..

I emvy the Game Ya cgn'rs chase but not the Game that Chases You! :)

Much the same as it is hunting, i grew up use too the rem700 .. it was good but 2 pos.

Majority in safe are 2 pos to be fair.

Sometimes I wonder if the people who are terrified to take a shell out of the chamber without a safety on are just as reluctant to chamber a shell without the safety on. This never seems to come up, nobody mentions it.
