How to value military rifles

Hey Folks. I have a WWII era SVT-40 scoped rifle. I bought this thing a decade ago for $3000 because I thought it looked awesome. I love this gun but I find myself looking at it and rarely out having fun with it. I'm considering getting rid of it so I can find some more toys that I will actually play with. I don't know much about this specific rifle or military rifles in general. I know the scope didn't originally belong to the rifle and the mount is a reproduction. I have had some friends offer me trades but I want to make sure I get what it is worth. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

I don't play in that type of spend arena for mil-surps, but knowing it is a "not original" (aka "fake") - not original scope, reproduction mount - your only hope is to find someone else who has done no research, but thinks it looks "awesome", as you did. No doubt the "mount" required holes to be drilled and tapped? Quick check on EE shows many SVT offered there in $700 to $900 price range...
 
Unfortunately whoever sold it to you hosed you pretty bad. The rifle is a standard Riga post war refurb SVT40. That alone would make it typically a $350 dollar gun 8 years ago, now it would typically be worth around $700- $800. Unfortunately again, the mag has been cut down, reducing the value by about $100. All told in its current configuration the rifle is probably worth around $900 to the right buyer with the scope and mount.
 
If you paid 3k a decade ago, you got swindled, HARD.

Value and worth are two different things. You may VALUE it at 3k, but its WORTH may only be $500. Condition, markings, features all play into it so pictures are needed.

Edit: Seen pics. Regular refurb with scope. Like I said, $500-$800 depending on buyer. I paid $350 for a similar SVT40 in 2008.
 
Allow me to chime in.
Rifle might be refurbished sniper (ГБ is sniper prefix in 1941, actually first month of mass-manufacturing of snipers) or might be refurbished regular rifle. More pictures required to tell for sure. Notch pictures from different angles and right side of receiver where "C" is supposed to be for 1941 rifles. Value of rifle will be defined as soon as we know for sure if it's sniper or regular rifle.
Mount is Chinese repro.
[CORRECTED] Scope is original and is MN scope, though retains "SVT" shape. Also scope is not refurbished so it adds value. But not even close to non-refurb SVT scopes that are extremely rare.

Going on current prices:

- Original Scope $300.00 to $400.00

- Repro mount $200.00 to 250.00

- SVT-40 Refurb rifle $600.00 cut down mag really hurts the value (last original I saw for sale was $200.00).


So top price for the rig $1,250.00 a long way from $3,000.00. On the open market maybe $1,000.00 for the whole packages.
 
Oi vey, I'm sorry you got hosed. This is why it pays to do ones due diligence and research before buying any piece of militaria - if you are looking for something specific and potentially valuable.

If you're just buying a Musty-Nugget because you want one, go nuts research be damned. But, if you're more serious about condition/matching serial numbers, etc., then you need to be much more wary and informed.
 
Thanks for all your input guys. I kind of figured I got screwed when I bought this gun but I was young and dumb and did zero research and I'm over it. This helps me figure out what a fair trade is for this gun so I actually find something I will use.
 
If the scope is original and not messed with you might see $1000+ for the package. I’ve seen SVT-40’s selling for $700-800 pretty quick lately

Post pictures of rifle I suggested. There's a difference between regular rifle refurb and sniper rifle refurb, that is if you care about extra $500.

I don’t think anyone is trying to steal anything off him. A true SVT sniper refurb won’t fetch $3000, maybe $1600 vs $1000, the mount is a refurb as stated so the rifle isn’t an original sniper that stayed that way
