How to?

Color Case Hardening.

Do a search of that term. There are a couple different methods. One uses a carbon pack material, another uses a molten cyanide bath.
Lots of variations.

Hi. Looks like that old marlin has what is called a "case hardened" finish. It is a result of the hardening process called case hardening. There many ways to case harden steel the way marlin did I do not know. To redo a similar finish I do not know, but I have attempted to blue other items and the result was similar, nickel steels will sometimes take blue like a case.hardened finish.
Be safe

Thanks double gun. Oskar is going to do mine for me. Very reasonably priced and not far from me at all. Now just to find someone who is good at refinishing/fixing old wooden stocks. Have some cracks and dings in this old girl not sure if they can be fixed or if it's better to replace the stock all together. Wanted to try to keep it all original but maybe give her a face lift and see how it turns out.
