How transport rifle on snowmobile?

Here's what my father did up for use on his trapline. Very sturdy and he loves it.

Rethinking this, it might just make more sense to pull a sled that can carry other supplies as well. I'm not fond of the idea of pulling something that might bounce around behind me, but there is such limited carrying room on a snowmobile, there's more issues than just carrying a rifle.

I preferred to use a soft case, along the side of the snowmobile. Out of the way, protected. If the machine rolls, the rifle is protected.
On a komatik is fine, too. Position it so that it won't get bent if the sled tips over.
Uncased, on the back, is the worst choice. Sights, action get covered with snow, as well as the bore if the muzzle isn't covered. Flip the machine, the rifle can get broken, or break you. If you need to sling the rifle, hang it around your neck, in front, under your arms.

We stored our 12 gauge pumps in a soft case and just laid it on the running board with the barrel held in the rack of the old bravo. Either that or slung on your back.

I was disappointed with my Gun Boot when it broke in the cold. A leather or cloth soft case isn't affected by low temperatures, and although they don't provide as much impact protection as a hard case, they do keep snow off your rifle. What some guys here do is carry their rifle across their chest. That makes it easy to adjust when moving through the trees and the rifle doesn't get covered in snow as it does when slung across your back.

Oops, I see Tiriaq has that covered.

I was considering the tow behind method, but concerned about the bouncing around. I would be lugging a scoped rifle. Shotguns I wouldn't care.
So far I have been using a soft case with a sling and mostly using a groomed trail to get to a hunting location so tree branches are not an issue. Would like to have more protection tough. We do have a requirement here to have guns cased on OHVs

if you are just transporting...
the simplest way is to use a soft case and put the muzzle end on the running board between your leg and the tunnel.Use a bungie cord to secure the butt end to your grab handle or whatever you have at the back of the machine.Your scope should end up against the side of your seat...well cushioned.

We used to carry ours on our backs by the sling just like walking but we would stretch a heavy hunting sock over the scope to keep snow off the lenses and tape the muzzle to keep snow out. Never had any issues doing that and we broke alot of trail going through deep powdered snow to get to our varmint hunting spots. It left us able to get off the machine quickly, exchange an empty clip for a loaded one and get shooting if the chance arose on the way into the site.

I use a leather scabbard or a good soft case on the side. I zap strap the barrel end to the running board and hang the rifle with leather straps to the othe side. Works goo with a thin peice of foam between the case and the machine. I then use a cheap cloth covered bugee to hold the gun tight to the machine, but losse enough it still pulls out easy.

I like the first set-up with pics too!

I've also seen old-time coyote hunters with a scabbard attatched to the side of the hood for an easy quick draw. I've tried that too and it's not bad, but my new ski-doo is shaped different and it doesn't work for me.

Would love to see a pic of your set up!
