How well does the Ruger American rimfire compare to the centerfire?

Recently got a new (to me) Ruger American centerfire rifle and pretty pleased with it. Considering getting it's mate in .22LR so that I can shoot all winter at the indoor range.

Been more of a benchrest & varmint shooter for my shooting career but want to learn how to be more skilled at offhand shots and awkward positions, figure a 22LR that fits the same would be good practice. If they are similar in fit & feel I will pick one up (pretty decently priced) but if they don't share much in common beside the name then I will consider other 22LR options
 
I owned the compact version and it did group well.
Little on the heavy side for what it is.
Trigger can be lightened up by replacing the spring.
 
I saw one last week, in the field.

It was being used for hunting bunnies and grouse.

The feed/ejection/60 degree bolt lift as well as the feel are very similar to CZ offerings. The triggers can be tuned to be very close and the stock fit is very close to the center fire version.

The big difference is bolt throw and weight.

If you're trying to duplicate the fit and feel of your RA center fire, maybe order it with a varmint profile barrel.

I was able to take a couple of shots out of the rifle and it handles very well off hand.

I'm not a great fan of accu triggers but lots of folks swear by them, so if you like them, I wouldn't hesitate to get one of these rifles.

However, if it were mine, I would definitely polish up the bolt ways and the bolt itself. Mind you, I did the same thing with the CZ rifles.
 
I’ve had 2 of the rimfire. The stainless was like a laser and the blued was a “tomato stake” . The both sounded like a “zipper” when the bolt was cycled. One big flaw was the “wrist” was too flexible. I could put a finger on it and watch the crosshairs rise and fall
 
Ive had two.First one was regular size synthetic stock, shot very nice with open sites. Liked it so much I let my son have it as his first .22. Recently bought it again with the wooden stock, don't like it as much. Gun shoots well enough, but open sites are not as good as the previous one.
 
Love mine, it's my grouse gun. It compares pretty well with my gen 1 in .223, and my gen 2 in 6.5 Gren. Odd thing is the barrel being longer than my 223s. I almost took my .223 out bird hunting as mine appear near identical, then saw the mag well. I now keep them separate from each other.
 
I have both the Ruger American in Centerfire and 22lr. Both are Affordable, functional. My .22 is not particularly accurate; I have shot it ALOT trying to get the right combination of ammo and optic.

My my buddy's CZ 457 is VERY accurate. The CZ build quality is much higher; Better metal, bolt, trigger, fit and finish. I'm gonna sell my Ruger American and go CZ. Cheers.
