I am mighty unlearned on this subject but couldn't human predatoration replace that of the wolf through either hunting or trapping?

That is what are hunting seasons and limits are trying to do. It is a balancing act. With habitat being reduced with human encroachment the land will only support so many animals. Wolves, bear, other predators and disease all effect population numbers. Remove or reduce any one of these and the species that these animals used will increase. This is where hunters play their part. Surpluse animals should be harvested. As hunters we do not have to hunt 24/7 as the wolves do. Our numbers are capable of harvesting far more animals than wolves can. Since man first appeared on earth he has been a hunter and a part of this process.
