If I'm not mistaken many of the US builders of match M14 rifles prefer walnut stocks as the GI glass stocks lack the rigidity. They twist when using the 1907 pattern sling properly. If you happen to see Art Luppino's CD's his bedding method removes a large amount of wood adjacent to the receiver and will have the glass from the trigger meet the glass from the receiver. It is not pillar bedding. This eliminates the issue that crush has with wood to some extent. Besides Walnut looks better.
