Actually, I pack pistols [okay, done it twice...] firmly padded in a cardboard box that I then wrap up with duct tape, and then slap on a printed page with the address covered with cello packing tape. I also take pictures of the box and send it to the buyer so they can see what the package should look like, and be able to instantly notice damage or tampering.
How would you expect a used restricted item be packaged for mailing?

Yup.
Duct tape leaves prints, cotton hockey tape is better, but only if its a rusted revolver. Autos I use gloves.

I've only mailed one in a trade. I shipped mine in a $8 walmart pistol case with the hammer tie wrapped down and a tie wrap through the cylinder. Case tie wrapped shut and squeezed into a tight cardboard box. The one I traded for was sent the same way.

I had a colt python shipped to me in a "Corn Flakes" box filled with news papers. Made it fine though
Another time a Kriss Vector came in the case that was only holding closed by two pieces of tape in the middle, so both ends were cracked open, you could see the barrel and the stock.. I still get weird looks at my post office.

True, but you could send the key while you are waiting for the transfer to approve (on a restricted at least), or use a combination one and email the code.
I've had pistols sent to me with a trigger lock and case lock installed, and I've had pistols shipped to me wrapped in a towel and wrapped with packing tape (with shipping instructions wrapped in tape as well). I don't particularly appreciate receiving a parcel that looks like a firearm but I suppose it might be entertaining to hear what postal workers have to say about those. Have also found them sitting on the step when I return from work even though they are marked "signature required".
If I ship a pistol with a trigger lock installed, I usually use one of those disposable units that requires a twin prong key to unscrew. I know this isn't a system that's terribly hard to defeat, but if the law sees them as adequate, I have addressed my "due diligence". As a true gun nut in Canada, you should have at least one of these keys floating around on your gun bench and if you don't, a pair of pliers or whatever will easily take care of removing it.
If a buyer would prefer a more secure lock, I'll provide it for an appropriate cost. But I honestly don't sell that many firearms.

My local post office workers are surprisingly ok with my parcels. When I walk up they usually have a comment about whatever new toy I'm buying or selling. I should take them to the range some time.
Or packing tape hey! I know I know, maybe I went a little over board. I tend to do this
1) Go to your local dollar store and buy a Tupperware container big enough for the gun. Usually the same size as the one your mom kept cookies in
2) Wrap the firearm in a tea towel or shove it in a sock
3) Lay down a good base layer of bubble wrap or newspaper on the bottom
4) Place the towel wrapped gun in
5) Completely fill the box with newspaper, bubble wrap, wood chips, foam, or what have you
6) Put the lid on the box and completely tape the box in BOTH direction with packing tape
7) Wrap the completely taped box in plain brown parcel paper and write the address
8) Completely wrap the entire parcel in packing tape again
9) send it as quick as you can, with signature required, insured, tracking number, and contact the seller within 15 minutes of leaving the post office
10) Track it yourself, to ensure it arrives safe. I feel responsible until the buyer receives it
11) Once delivered, contact the buyer and ensure they are satisfied with everything.
That's my routine. Only complaint I get is, "Why the F### did you put so much tape on it"? Well... Can't hurt. If it was a nice firearm and the postman left it in the rain for 8 hours while you were working, would you prefer it to be water proof, or a completely soaking wet shoe box that's falling apart with a gun that needs complete disassembly to dry out and re oiled to prevent rusting?
If you ever buy from me, I assure you, this is how you will receive it lol

I disagree. Do not put it in tupperware. If you do and I receive it, I will get excited that I got cookies try to eat my gun and be very upset because my teeth are broken.
I can not understand why anyone would want to trigger lock the handgun when they sell it (unless of course if that's the law) Do you think people are going to take the gun out of the package and shoot someone and then put it back.
I think not, they are just going to steal it and we or the new owner will likely never see it or hear of it again. Wrap it securely and put it in a plain covered box just like the imports do when they send them to the dealers and mail it and Bob's your uncle.

My comment to TDC about duct tape was for a gun i sold to him lol. I duct tape the #### out of it. He described it as bomb proof packaging lol.

Hardcase w/bubble wrap, packing peanuts/newspaper so nothing moves inside, in a strong cardboard box and "bombproof" tape it with industrial packing tape, which is like $2/roll.
Sold a bunch and have never had a problem. Takes a few minutes to open it, but any package you send someone should arrive without damage.
