Hey guys. I'm in the process of acquiring a new to me .17 Remington in Tikka 595. This gun will be used for coyotes, foxes and jacks but also crow and feral cat sniping. I live in a rural area but there are enough houses around to worry about ricchets and noise. So I reckon the .17 should be perfect, better than my 22-250 and .243. So to the point, how would you all scope this puppy? I have my thoughts but can amazingly be leaned to just about any magnification and brand.
What I like in a scope:
-clear
-finer crosshairs, really like target dots but can give or take on this one.
-multi power (leaning toward 3-9 or 4-12, higher power might be nice)
-shots will be 300 yards or shorter
-maybe target knobs. Would be nice if I knew the yards to dial in the shot but this adds to cost and might make me look like a 'tacti-queer'.
-Would like the price to be under $500.00.
Later and thanks, Rob.

P.S. hope no-one takes offense to the 'tacti-queer' comment. If I read another post about a new guy wanting to build a 'sniper rifle' for under $500.00 I'm going to puke.

In your price range a Nice VXII 3-9x40 would do for under 300m but a 4-12 might be a better option for little targets beyond the 200 mark.
Leupold VXI, VXII or the Elite 3200 line by Bushnell are good options under your 500 dollar limit.
Some real good deals in the Optics forum as well as of late...plenty of nice 4-12's and such on thier.
Happy hunting:)

I've got a 4-12 VX11 AO on my .17, a Remington Light varmint synthetic. With the new pricing it might be hard to get that under the $500 mark, but I haven't checked lately.
Since you list 300 as your max range I'd forget the turrets.

Several years ago when I put my 17 Rem together the only scope available to me was a beat-up old 12x Leupold .
I put it on and vowed to find a nice 3x9x40 and it just never happened.
The 12x has worked great especially for reaching coyotes way out there.
But, maybe someday...or who knows, perhaps Santa will bring one....:)

If you get bored of that rifle, let me know, i had one and loved it, then sold it for way to cheap.

4-12 or something along those lines would be perfect. Flavour of glass should please you first, but spend your budget. If there is anything i have learned, it is that optics are well worth what you spend on them, and can change the shooting experience.

I have a 4-12 on my 17 Rem but since I shoot mainly gophers I would like to upgrade to a 6-18 fine plex some day. You can get some good deals on used scopes here in the EE, just make sure you know what the new price of the scope is and access the used value before committing to the deal.
