If you find one make sure the bolt shroud upgrade has been done they were recalled I know I had one blow up in my hands about 10 years ago.

I'm sure they still do the upgrade my neighbour had one done a few years ago he called the company somewere in the states they mailed him a prepaid envolope with instructions and not to shoot the gun and to mail them the bolt right away he did about a month after he got the bolt back no problem.

Howa Machinery Ltd. of Japan is performing a "safety upgrade" (ie: recall) on all Model 1500, 1550 and 1700LS series rifles manufactured between 1970 and 1993. The affected rifles bear serial numbers from one of the following series on the receiver: PN00010-PN87159, LS00001-LS05150, M000001-M020422, LS10001-LS10309 and B000001-B028450. The safety upgrade will replace the bold sleeve to prevent mis-assembly of the bolt, which might occur on the affected rifles. Such mis-assembly might result in a hazardous condition in which the rifle can be accidentally discharged without the bolt being fully engaged, causing severe injury. These rifles were distributed by Smith & Wesson, O.F. Mossberg and Interarms. Howa warned that, if you own one, stop using the rifle immediately and go to regcen.com/howa/index.html or call Howa at 800-456-5131 to receive a Bolt Return Kit. Only the bolt sleeve is upgraded, you do NOT need to ship your rifle or barreled action to Howa.

been to this site..I can't see how the pin can drop without the cocking piece in the notch...how did they actually make it fire without the bolt closed?
