I am begining to make my final decision on a .308 purchase when I came across a HOWA M-1500. Other than the fact they built S&W, Weatherby and Mossberg. Is this rifle another viable choice against the obvious selection?

HOWA makes Weatherby's and howa is made in Japan
My dads rifle is a Weatherby vanguard in 30-06 and right on the side it says made in japan by howa. It is a real tack driver thought.
Also from what I have found Howa is its own company and makes all its own stuff but when i looked in to this is was 2005 and a lot can change in 4 years.

Howa 1500 / Weatherby Vanguard are both the same gun and very similar to the Rem700, in fact any 700 base will fit the 1500.

IMO the Howa 1500 action offers a bit more than the Rem700 and for much less. The bolt and bolt handle are one piece, the extractor setup is much better, overall finish is better, receiver bottom is square which makes bedding a little more simple if that's an issue for you, recoil lug is one piece with the receiver, trigger could use replacement though.
