Howa Mini Action 7.62x39 W/ 20 Inch Heavy Barrel

I prefer a flat bottom as well, and agree loading, specially one is easy and fast enough.
I also prefer hunting on foot, but I can easily see where a guy jumping out of his truck might just prefer to have his loose rounds in a box magazine and then simply insert it into a mag well.

I've used both and did drop a mag in the bush on one occasion and had to backtrack to find it.... clearly there are down sides to detachable magazines.

I prefer detachable magazines. I guess that dates back to being in the military, and training with rifles that have detachable magazines. Further to that, I like how I can unload my rifle in an organized fashion rather than having the shells drop from the bottom.
I lost a detachable magazine only once. It had dropped out of the C7 because I failed to ensure it was locked in place. Consequently, the dressing down I got, served to remind me ever after. No lost mags since.

Yikes! You must have heard some interesting things!

Nothin wrong with a good DBM setup at all :)

I don't mind a good detachable mag. I just don't like the big ones that hang down where I might want to carry my rifle in one hand.

All the 760s I've owned had a flush detach. mag and I liked them.

It depends where the balance point is, but on some of my rifles with short protruding magazines and scopes I find it easier to trail carry with one hand right up against the magazine and a finger or 2 wrapping around the mag.

The Savage bolt action 3030s are nice for that too. Pretty unobtrusive, nice lil gun.

Can-down, I know what you mean about the rifle-and-mag grip carry as well.

xbolt has a decent flush mag, I don't think I ever carry one handed though.

For me one hand trail carry is more for clearing obstacles or thick brush when I need my other hand to help scramble or move branches. The best feeling one handers have thin receiver profiles and no scopes on top where your hand is.

Both the Howa and CZ would be much better served with a hinged bottom from the factory, or at least a shorter flush magazine that won't fall out.

Yep. The hinged bottom metal is a massive improvement on my Howa and I wish there was one for my CZ.

To each their own, I’m in the other camp. I like a box mag over the floor plate, I took the one my Howa came with and put the mag kit in. Which buy the way I’ve never lost while hiking/hunting with it, it has the right level of friction between the mag and magwell. Even if the release latch is pulled it won’t fall out.

It just makes sense on a hunting gun to have a mag release that is not the typical "drop free" that racers and warriors are looking for.
I seem to recall recently hearing of a mag release design that had a safety feature of some sort to avoid unwanted releases.

I will say having the release in front of the mag isn’t the smartest idea but I’ve not had issues with it, I prefer the release to be at the back of the mag closer to the trigger guard. I have a legacy mag kit for another rifle and it’s the same as my Howa, slight friction fit. So no risk of it falling out but easy to pull out, maybe they fixed the issue some people have experienced. Would be a pain in the ass to have a hunting rifle with a mag that easy to have fall out.

I'm looking to purchase a Howa Mini Action 7.62x39 W/ 20" Heavy Barrel.

The 7.62x39 is more like a short range plinker with surplus ammo and short range deer rifle with SP ammo and not known for fine accuracy.

I don't understand the desire for an HB.

I like the concept of a short rifle in that caliber. The 20 inch heavy barrel is a moot point, as I have not seen a rifle with a 20" standard barrel. I can live with the heavier contour. If you have seen a 20" model with standard barrel please let me know. I will buy it immediately.

The 20” heavy barrels are slick, sure a bit heavier than a standard barrel but that’s a trade off I’ll make any day of the week.

Prophet River has what you're looking for but 22". It wouldn't be too big of a deal to have it cut to 20.
